Military Briefs

Air Force 2nd Lt. Eric E. Eibe has arrived at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, to begin undergraduate pilot training.

Lt. Eibe will undergo 190 flying hours, 62 simulator hours, 342 academic hours and 105 officer training hours. The training qualifies officers to perform duties and responsibilities of rated pilots.

Eibe is the son of Marsha D. Eibe of Miami, Fla. His wife, Dawn, is the daughter of Joanne Lucas of Peachtree City, Ga.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeffery M. Meyers, a 1988 graduate of McIntosh High School, recently participated in a large training exercise while on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf with the attack submarine USS Newport News, home ported in Norfolk, Va.

During Exercise Matador Livex '98, Meyers' ship trained with U.S. Navy units from the USS Saipan Amphibious Ready Group, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Battle Group and other special naval support elements, including the Navy Seals, in the one-week exercise in the Mediterranean Sea. The intense exercise tested every mission phase of a combined force including air, surface, subsurface, non-combatant expeditionary operations and maritime interdiction operations.

The overall purpose of the exercise was to enhance ARG and carrier battle group interoperability in an operational environment.

Meyers' submarine is one of the most sophisticated submarines in the world. Equipped with torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and mines, the powerful warship can provide surveillance and intelligence, support special operations and launch missiles at enemy sites or land targets.

Meyers joined the Navy in July 1988.
