Letters from Our Readers

My children came to Fayette County school system from Bergen County New Jersey, home of some of the finest school systems in the country, so maybe the comparison isn't fair. if it isn't, why are we accepting this?

My daughter left a fourth grade that had a math class where she was multiplying three digit numbers with three digit numbers and was doing long division two digits into three digits. Each night there were 50 math problems, six history questions, and English assignment, a science assignment, and something for health. Spelling words were used in history and English as well as spelling.

The teacher collected the homework. No correct it yourself and keep it in the book for open book tests! The teacher graded the homework! The teacher also kept a pin drop quiet classroom! My daughter was required to write in whole sentences and spell all words correctly! Here it seems we allow the children to talk in class, get up from their seats, sleep in class, correct and keep tack of their own work. Grades used to be one third for class work, one third for class participation and one third for homework. Now the onus is put on the parents, because most of the written work is done at home.

Chicago math is not the only thing that needs to be changed. If someone else can do it so can we.
