Last month's action by the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals invalidating the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) new air quality standards gives the taxpayers additional ammunition to fight costly legislation that will raise taxes on gasoline and SUVs. The court ruled 2 to 1 that the EPA exceeded its constitutional authority and was unanimous in holding that portions of the agency standards were arbitrary and capricious because the EPA excluded scientific evidence and adopted indefensible measurements. Once again the Clinton-Gore Administration has lied to us. These data would have been used to justify federal and state legislation for additional taxes on car owners, especially SUV drivers. The increased taxes would also fund other big government boondoggles like the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA), a body that is empowered to dictate to local governments. Please call or write your state and federal representatives. Remind them that the GRTA was created to operate under the premise that the EPA standards were law; instead they are a fraud. Also remind them that the standards were never referred to Congress, as required by President Clinton's own Executive Order 12866 (now we know why), and ask them why we need a GRTA if the clean air standards are another Clinton-Gore deceit. You might also tell them we are tired of the Clinton-Gore decade of deceit, and we'd just like the administration to be honest with us for a change or at least stop playing the taxpayers and the Congress for fools.
