Residents seeking a unique way to beat the heat will want to beat a path to downtown Newnan next weekend for the annual Homemade Ice Cream Festival. The festival is Sept.4 and runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Court Square. Civic clubs, schools, churches and other non-profit organizations will be churning out their favorite recipes of homemade ice cream to raise funds for their activities. Businesses are also participating to help raise money for a favorite charity or other worthy cause. The top three flavors will be chosen by a panel of judges made up of local television personalities and cash prizes will be awarded. The first place winner receives $100, while second and third place winners receive $50 and $25 respectively. Competing teams will also offer their homemade ice cream for sale for $1 a scoop, and there will be a great variety of flavors to try. Other foods from hamburgers to hot dogs and baked goods will also be offered at the festival. All profits earned by competitors go to support a variety of projects, including local churches, Girl Scouts, Masonic charities, Junior Achievement and Habitat for Humanity. The event takes place during the annual Festival Days celebration of the annual Powers' Crosssroads Country Fair and Art Festival. For more information on the event, call Mary Jo Holden at the Main Street Newnan office at 770-254-3703.
