Looking for ways to help in the battle against cancer? Try swirlin’.

Swirling the yogurt — that is.

“When I decided to open the TCBY in Peachtree City, one of my commitments was to give back to the community,” said Mike Murtaugh, owner of the new TCBY in the Braelinn Shopping Center. “I had been in the corporate world all my business life, and I wanted to make a change. At the same time, I wanted to make sure as a local business owner that I found ways to give back to the community that has been so good to me and my family.”

He found an answer. On January 20, Murtaugh will team with Terri Clark to put together a fundraiser to aid in the fight against cancer. He has agreed to give $1 for every 16 ounces of yogurt sold between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on that Thursday. But he also wants this day to be more than just a fund-raiser. He is hoping to use this opportunity to “get the message out.”

Volunteers from Relay for Life in Fayette County will be on hand all day to talk about the Relay and how others can get involved in the annual event. This year’s Relay for Life — the first-ever Runway Relay — will be April 29 at Atlanta Regional Airport- Falcon Field in Peachtree City.

Murtaugh, who says like so many others his life has been touched by cancer through family members, became involved in Relay For Life through family-friend Terri Clark.

“I noticed that she was so involved and does so much good for this community, that I wanted to jump in and help her,” he said.

Terri’s commitment to the Relay For Life is no secret. She has been among the Relay’s top individual money raisers for the past few years, and will have a team in the Relay For Life again this year.

“This is a good cause, such a good cause,” said Clark. “I know so many people whose lives have been impacted by this dreadful disease. This is my way of helping in the fight.”

Murtaugh has sponsored similar fund-raisers for PTC elementary schools Braelinn and Kedron.

“Those were good events for the schools, and we want this one to be even bigger,” said Murtaugh. “We also want to use this time to be an out-reach program, to help promote the message of the Cancer Society and the Relay For Life.”

Relay For Life is the signature fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society.
