Carlton Frank “Bud” Schrader, age 90, of Peachtree City, Ga. passed away on January 15, 2014.

Bud was born on July 31, 1923 in Saint Paul, Minn. to the late Clifford and Mary Schrader.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Merle Schrader Newell; and his brothers, Phillip Schrader and Lyle Schrader. His brother Robert Schrader (Shirley) of Wentsville, Mo. survives him.

He met his wife, then Mavis Jensen, when they were Junior’s in high school. They were married on September 5, 1942. After 71 wonderful years of marriage, Mavis survives him.

Bud joined the Army in February of 1943. He served 14 months in the European Theatre as a medic with the 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division. His division was credited with the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

After WWII, he attended the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering in December 1948. By January 1949 Bud was hired by Inland Steel Company in East Chicago, Ind. He and Mavis moved their children to Chesterton, Ind. Bud became Superintendent of the Metallurgical Department in 1962 and Manager of the Quality Control Division in 1965.

He retired in 1984 as Assistant to the vice president of Operations where he was in charge of Technical Assessments of the Steel Industry, a position which required many trips to other steel companies throughout Europe and Japan. After retiring from Inland Steel, he joined Hatch Engineering as a consultant but soon formed his own Metallurgical Consulting Company which remained active until 1992. He was a member of the AIME, ASM, and ISO. A member of the Masonic Lodge 379, was a 32nd degree Mason, and a Shriner. Bud was elected to the Duneland School Board in 1966 where he served for 11 years, many as Board President.

He and Mavis are former members of the First United Methodist Church of Chesterton. In 1997, they moved to Peachtree City, Ga. where they became members of the Peachtree City United Methodist Church. He was an avid game bird, deer, and antelope hunter. He also enjoyed fishing and golf.

Bud is survived by his four children, Gail Schrader (Peachtree City, Ga.), Nancy Schrader (Port Townsend, Wash.), Douglas (Linda) Schrader (New Concord, Ky.), and Susan (Van) Vandivier (Peachtree City, Ga.). He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for February 1, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Peachtree City United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Westminster Memorial Gardens. After the interment a reception will be held at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Association, Alzheimer’s Association or American Heart Association in his memory.
