Forecast: 2 inches of snow, half-inch of sleet

    UPDATED Monday 11:19 p.m. — The latest forecast is for Peachtree City, Newnan and surrounding areas to receive up to two inches of snow — with locally higher amounts — and sleet accumulations of up to a half-inch.

    The icy stuff will start falling by mid-morning Tuesday and continue through the late evening, said the NWS Forecast Office at Falcon Field in Peachtree City.

    Here’s the Monday, 9:36 p.m winter storm watch issued by the NWS:

    “Winter storm warning remains in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 1 p.m. EST Wednesday.

    “• Locations: For portions of north central Georgia, mainly along a line from Franklin, to Peachtree City, to Lexington.

    “• Hazard types: Snow and sleet.

    “• Accumulations: Snow accumulations of one to two inches with locally higher amounts. Sleet accumulations around half an inch.

    “• Timing: Snow is expected to develop across the area by mid-morning and continue through Tuesday night. Sleet will mix with snow at times through the evening. The heaviest precipitation is expected late Tuesday afternoon and evening.

    “• Impacts: Snow- and ice-covered roads will make travel difficult or impossible beginning Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. Light icing will make sidewalks and walkways treacherous.

    “• Visibilities: Reduced visibilities in areas of snow will also make travel difficult in addition to slick roadways.

    “• Temperatures: High temperatures are expected to occur early Tuesday morning with values falling through the 20s in the afternoon.

    “Overnight Tuesday, temperatures will range from the upper teens to around 20.

    “High temperatures on Wednesday are expected in the middle 30s, with values finally rising above freezing during the early afternoon.

    “Precautionary/preparedness actions:

    “Now is the time to prepare for this winter storm. Be sure to buy non perishable foods. Make contingency plans if you plan on travelings during this period. If you can change your travel, do so before the event starts.”

    The forecast for the Peachtree City area as of 11 p.m. Monday is as follows:

    Tuesday — Snow, mainly after 1 p.m. High near 32. North wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

    Tuesday night — Snow, mainly before 1 a.m. Low around 19. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

    Wednesday — Mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

    UPDATED Monday 3:45 p.m. — It’s now a warning, not a watch, the National Weather Service said at 3:22 Monday afternoon.

    The forecast is for Peachtree City, Newnan and surrounding areas to receive up to two inches of snow — with locally higher amounts — and sleet accumulations of up to a half-inch.

    The icy stuff will start falling by mid-morning Tuesday and continue through the late evening, said the NWS Forecast Office at Falcon Field in Peachtree City.

    The local forecast is 90 percent chance of snow and sleet Tuesday, and 80 percent Tuesday night.

    Local emergency officials are warning motorists to stay off the road tomorrow if at all possible. Driving conditions may become quite treacherous.

    A winter storm warning for snow and sleet means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. The amount of snow that is forecast will make travel dangerous. Only travel in a emergency. If you must travel keep an extra flashlight food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

    Snow now is forecast to fall in a band stretching from as far south as Cordele and Macon to north of Atlanta.

    The local forecast is for around an inch of the white stuff.

    Earlier online story — We’ve been watching TV pictures of snow accumulations well north of us. Now we’ll experience Old Man Winter for ourselves by mid-week, according to the National Weather Service’s Forecast Office in Peachtree City.

    No official word yet on whether that means school closings Tuesday and Wednesday.

    The forecast for Fayette and Coweta counties calls for a 40 percent chance of snow after 1 p.m. Tuesday. Cloudy, with a high near 33. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

    Tuesday night, there’s a 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 21. North wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
