Several different classes are being offered in February by the Horticulture Program of the University of Georgia Fayette Extension office.

The classes are free and held next door to the Extension office in Room 210 of the Fayette County Administrative Complex. The times for each class vary, however.

The classes include the following;

Feb. 3 – Working with Georgia Clay; 10 a.m.

Does the family leave red tracks on your carpet? Do you need a pick axe or a jack hammer to loosen the “soil” before planting? If you answered yes, this class is for you. We all have red Georgia clay in our back yards and get frustrated with growing ornamental and vegetables successfully. Come learn how beneficial clay can be when amended properly, the value of a soil test, and ornamental and edibles that will do well in local soils.

Feb. 17 – Raised Bed Gardening and Container Gardening For Beginners; 11 a.m.

Do you have a small gardening area? A small family? Do you look at your back yard and have no idea where to start? If you answered yes to any of the above, this class is for you. Come learn the basics of starting a raised bed from building materials to plants. This is a beginner class and fundamentals of vegetable gardening will be discussed. Feel free to bring lunch.

Feb. 24 – Basic Vegetable Gardening; 12 noon

Lunch and Learn: bring lunch and enjoy the program.
What am I supposed to do first? Why does this vegetable require so much attention? Do you follow all the instructions and still your plants flop? Are you ready to give up? If you answered yes to any of the above, this class is for you. Come learn techniques on ways to grow your own vegetables in Georgia. This class will focus on site selection, purchasing plants (transplants vs. seeds), succession planting, and pest management. A brief overview of planting fundamentals and raised beds will be discussed.

Please RSVP so seating and materials will be available to everyone. RSVP via e-mail to uge2113@uga.edu with the name(s) of those attending and contact information or call the Extension office at 770-305-5412, ext. 7.

The classes last about 1 hour — 45 minutes for the presentation and 15 minutes for questions.
