The continued effects of the winter storm on roadways has led to Coweta County schools remaining closed on Thursday for students and staff, according to school system spokesman Dean Jackson.

Coweta County Emergency Management Agency Director Jay Jones on Wednesday morning said the 911 center through Tuesday and into Wednesday received 100-200 calls, with many of those being accident-related.

There was one traffic fatality in Coweta. Sixty-year-old Griffin resident Yvonne Nash was driving on Ga. Highway 85 near the intersection with Seavy Street in Senoia when she lost control of her vehicle, said Jones. Nash was transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital where she later died from injuries, according to reports

The remaining traffic accidents across Coweta resulted from motorists becoming stuck or running off the road, said Jones, adding that there were numerous injuries. None of those injuries were of a serious nature, he said.

As for travel in Coweta Wednesday and over the next couple of days, Jones advised motorists to stay off roadways unless travel is absolutely necessary.

“Secondary roadways will be especially treacherous,” said Jones.

Jones’ advisory noted the current forecast for overnight temperatures Wednesday to hover in the low teens, thus allowing roadways with ice to re-freeze.

“Conditions are bad now and they are not improving,” said Jones.

Also closed on Thursday will be all Coweta County government offices.
