Southside Theatre Guild will present Lorraine Hansberry’s play “ A Raisin In The Sun,’ for three weekends starting this Thursday with an Opening Night Gala.

The play, set on Chicago’s South Side, focuses on three generations of the Younger family. The family is due to receive an insurance check from the deceased Mr. Younger’s life insurance policy and several members of the family have different ideas about what to do with the money. The tensions and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama. Sacrifice, trust and love among the family and their heroic struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world is a searing and timeless document of hope and inspiration.

“A Raisin in the Sun” was the first play written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway and was nominated for four Tony Awards in 1960. It featured Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee among others. The original Broadway cast starred in the film in 1961, also written by Hansberry. It was produced on Broadway again in 2004 and featured Phylciai Rashad, Sean Combs, Bill Nunn and Sanaa Lathan among others.

The production at Southside Theatre Guild features DeKalb County residents Jay Michael Isbell and Adrienne Harris and Walter Lee and Beneatha Younger and Fulton County residents Kristi Garrett (Ruth Younger), Javin Jordan (Travis Younger), Cheryl Evette Booker (Lena “Mama” Younger), Jason Louder (Joseph Asagai), Herman Spearman (George Murchison) and Timothy Aaron Styles (Bobo). The show is directed by Jim Abert.

Performances will run at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays Feb. 9-12, 17-19 and 24-26. Tickets are $8 for children 12 and under for all shows.
