Sandy Creek kids keep collecting awards

The medals keep mounting for Sandy Creek High School’s SkillsUSA Chapter as members conquered their regional competition, and are preparing to do the same at the state conference in March.

The chapter medaled in nine out of 13 competitions, earning four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. More than 500 students from the region competed in 33 contests in the areas of architecture, construction, communication, transportation, public safety, cosmetology, and culinary arts.

Sandy Creek students earning medals include: Diana Lopez (Gold – Early Childhood Education), Jordan Fason (Gold – Extemporaneous Speaking), Helen Smith (Gold – Graphic Communications), Andrew Alberts (Gold – T-Shirt Design & Presentation), Chidera Obinali (Silver – Advertising Design), Megan D’Errico (Silver – Pin Design & Presentation), Jonathan Roberts (Bronze – Automotive Service Technology), Nickolas Davis, Brittany Floyd, Simone Floyd and Amanda Jackson (Bronze – Broadcast News Production), and Emanuel Aneke, Jin Kim, Karena Oun, Amanda Paver and Jade Ponder (Bronze – Quiz Bowl).

Additionally, students who placed in the top 10 are Xena Diaz (4th place – Job Interview), Gregory Ellis (4th Place – Job Skill Demonstration A), Meagan Coleman (6th Place – Prepared Speech), and Peyton Bolling (7th Place – First Aid/CPR).

Students earning gold and silver medals will advance to the 2015 SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership and Skills Conference March 26-28.

Chapter members also participated in the operation of the regional competition. Kasey Melkonian, the school’s chapter president and SkillsUSA Georgia State secretary, officiated over the general sessions. Meredith Beard, Jessica Green, Cameron King, and Madison Riley served as courtesy corps volunteers, helping to facilitate the competition.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps high school and college students enrolled in career and technical education programs to excel by teaching employability skills such as communication, problem solving, and leadership in conjunction with their trade, technical and service occupation skills.
