American Legion Post 50 in Peachtree City recently held Area Finals for the Annual Constitutional Oratorical Contest that the American Legion has sponsored since 1938.

Patrick Dodson of Peachtree City won the American Legion Silver Medal and a $300 prize with his speech “Vaccine for Tyranny,” while Patrick Wu of Johns Creek won the Gold Medal and a $350 prize with his speech “On Promise.”

Both students were winners of their respective Legion Districts and have accumulated nearly $1,000 each in cash prizes. Wu will now go on to compete as a finalist in the Georgia state competition. All State level winners will compete at the National level where the prizes are significantly higher — $18,000 in scholarship money for first prize, $16,000 for second prize and $14,000 for third prize.

This was the third such competition this year sponsored by Peachtree City’s Post 50 and included various civic and community leaders as judges.

The American Legion hosts the Constitutional Oratorical competition every year to increase awareness and understanding of the U.S. Constitution. The competition is open to all high school students under the age of 20, including home schooled students. More information is available at http://www.legion.org/oratorical.
