Peggy Smith Chaney of Fayetteville, formally of Hapeville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.

Peggy was born in Atlanta on July 20, 1922.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Hardy Smith and Kate Sawyer Smith and 5 loving siblings: Thelma McCurdy, Ethel McGee, Sarah Jones, Howard Smith, and Bertha Mills. Peggy was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, the late Gerald Royce Chaney.

She is survived by three children who loved her dearly, Darryl (Gay), Dale (June), and Doe Evans (John). Peggy was a loving grandmother to six grandchildren: Christi Akins, Dee Chaney, Brad Chaney, Kate McCain, Camille Jammes-Vining, and Colin Evans. One of Peggy’s greatest accomplishments was being MeMa to 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Her loving niece, Bonnie Bolin was like a daughter to her.

Peggy was a homemaker who loved to cook and feed her family in the custom of delicious Southern cooking. She was also an accomplished needle worker who created many beautiful treasures. She was a longtime member of the Joy Sunday School class at Fayetteville First Baptist.

Visitation was held on Monday, Feb. 25 at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home in Fayetteville from 2-4 and 6-8. The funeral was held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 11 in the Jack Overton Chapel at Fayetteville First Baptist Church. Her beloved minister, the Rev. Glenn Stringham officiated.
