A 64-year-old Fayetteville resident has been arrested for driving off after her vehicle struck a woman walking her son to the bus stop in north Fayette County Tuesday morning, sheriff’s officials said.

Verolyn Kennebrew was charged today with felony hit and run and also failure to maintain lane, according to Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb.

The victim and her son were walking to the bus stop in the Princeton Chase subdivision off Ga. Highway 314 when the incident happened around 6:50 a.m., Babb said.

The victim’s son had to run off to get help after Kennebrew fled the scene, leaving the pedestrian laying on the ground, Babb said. The victim was transported to Grady Hospital for treatment, and pieces of the vehicle were recovered at the scene, Babb said.

Those pieces were used to match with Kennebrew’s vehicle this morning as investigators conducted an extensive search of the subdivision around the same time the initial crime occurred, Babb said.

As of Wednesday afternoon the victim was recovering from her injuries in the Intensive Care Unit at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, officials said.
