A Jonesboro man was arrested March 13 after fleeing from Fayette County deputies attempting a traffic stop. Deputies found the man in a store in Fulton County where he was arrested on drug charges after a K-9 unit found a bag of marijuana he tossed in the store.

Darrell Johnson, 32, was charged with felony possession of marijuana and felony fleeing and attempting to elude, according to Sheriff Barry Babb.

Babb said a deputy attempted a traffic stop on Johnson’s vehicle at 12:15 p.m. in the area of Ga. Highway 314 and Ga. Highway 138. Johnson pulled into a gas station, turned around and led deputies on a pursuit along Hwy. 138 and onto Old National Highway in Fulton County, Babb said.

Babb said deputies pursued the vehicle to the Dollar Tree store on Old National where Johnson stopped and fled into the store while carrying a plastic bag.

Deputies gave chase and cornered Johnson in the rear of the store. Asked the location of the bag he had been carrying, Johnson told deputies he did not have a bag, Babb said.

A K-9 unit was called to the scene and subsequently found the bag that contained approximately two ounces of suspected marijuana, said Babb.

Johnson was arrested at the scene and transported to the Fayette County Jail.
