A Thursday morning structure fire severely damaged a home on Lees Mill Road in north Fayette County owned by the family of county commissioner Allen McCarty.

The fire was reported to 911 by an employee of Coweta-Fayette EMC who happened to notice smoke coming from the home at 163 Lees Mill Road as he drove by, according to Division Chief Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Prior to calling 911, the employee, Curtis Camp, went to the door and notified the occupant of the home so she could go to safety while he reported the fire to authorities.

The first unit arrived five minutes after it was dispatched and saw heavy smoke coming from the home, and the attic was partially involved with fire, Nelms said.

Multiple county units responded along with personnel from the city of Fayetteville and city of Fairburn fire departments, Nelms said.

The home was extensively damaged by the blaze, Nelms said.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire, but there were no indications of any suspicious nature, Nelms said. The investigation into the blaze will be conducted by the Fayette County Fire Marshal.
