In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Fayette County Public Library presents “Poets in the Spotlight,” a poetry performance revue and open mike session on Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Sara De Luca, a published poet who lives in Peachtree City, leads The Poet Tree, a monthly poetry circle that grew out of a series of workshops she conducted at the library last fall. Members of The Poet Tree gather at the Fayette County Public Library on the third Monday evening of each month at 7 p.m. to share poems they are writing, as well as the work of poets they admire. New members, high school age to adult, are welcome to join anytime.

The “Poets in the Spotlight” program features the members of The Poet Tree reading or reciting their own works of poetry, or poems they particularly enjoy by published poets. Once the poetry group members have finished reading, interested audience members will be invited to take the stage to present one or two poems each – either their original work, or that of poets they admire.

“Poetry comes to life when it is spoken aloud. Whether you write poetry yourself, or just love to read it and hear it, this evening offers you a chance to revel in the beauty of the spoken word. All adults and teens are welcome to attend and participate,” said library director Chris Snell.

Unlike a poetry slam, the open mike session does not involve any judging, scoring, or prizes – just the thrill of sharing one’s work with the public, and hearing what others have to contribute.

All participants are asked to use good judgment and show respect for the community when selecting works for presentation. All material performed should be clean and PG-rated. Each performer is limited to a maximum of two poems.
