A bill that had been languishing in the Georgia legislature for a number of years was signed into law by Gov. Nathan Deal in April. The Senoia City Council on June 6 addressed the potential for the Sunday sale of packaged alcohol, voting 3-1 to have a proposed ordinance drawn up for the council’s consideration in August. If approved, the measure would be put before voters on the November ballot.

A discussion by the council led to the idea of having city attorney Drew Whalen draw up a proposed ordinance addressing Sunday package sales that would be permitted from 12:30-11:30 p.m.

The proposed ordinance will be presented to the council for a vote in August.

The council’s vote to have the proposed ordinance drawn up was 3-1, with Councilman Bobby Graham opposing.

City resident Don Rehman during public comments suggested it might be appropriate to get citizen input prior to determining if the matter should put on the ballot. Mayor Robert Belisle responded, saying that the idea behind potentially having the measure on the ballot was to give residents the opportunity to have their say on the issue.

Prior to Deal’s signature, the vote on Senate Bill 10 was 32-22 in the Senate and 127-44 in the House.

Until the bill’s passage, only Connecticut, Indiana and Georgia prohibited the sale of packaged alcohol on Sundays.
