PTC parade: Where’s patriotic music?
Peachtree City is one of six cities in the running for Most Patriotic Town, so where was the patriotic music in our 4th of July parade?
From the looks and sounds of the one-hour-and-20-minute parade, it was all about candy, advertising fliers, rock, heavy metal and rap music.
There was one lone bagpiper, one float, and one band playing patriotic music.
What about “God Bless America,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “America the Beautiful,” and how about military songs honoring our brave men and women fighting for our freedoms?

That was may first comment to my wife as we left the parade - having enjoyed ourselves - that I longed for more music. Seems to me that one of the most patriotic towns in America could attract some bands that would like a venue. And what is wrong with SMHS or Sandy Creek - they don't have to be in PTC to be appreciated and welcomed. I don't think we have to jump on Carol for being grumpy because she noticed a few things that could be improved in our parade. We need to get our businesses and clubs and schools more involved. PTC is a great place and our parade was fun but we can do better - if we want to - and if we don't shoot those who challenge us to.
Geez folks, Carol didn't insult anyone she just pointed out that more patriotic music would have been nice. She is right though, it has turned into an advertising fest. Wasn't there this year for the same reason....hey did the politicians stay home this year?
And how patriotic is it to leave trash to be picked up by someone else after the parade and fireworks?
Here ya go Carol. hope you enjoy this....

Thank you! That was wonderful!
Excellent link Hutch.
parade to bring it up to your standards? I am sure those who work to put it together would appreciate the help and all the wonderful ideas I am sure you have to improve it.
Can't wait til next year to see all the new things you implement.
Don't hold your breath MYTMITE, one thing I learned working with the band kids, is while there are always 20 people to tell you how it should be done, there's only 1 who will actually help you.
and never forget that.
I saw all kinds of flag waging, and heard all kinds of music...had a blast as usual.
Same with the fireworks show, makes me proud to live here.
I don't like parades of any kind! They have nothing to do with true patriotism. Patriots sacrifice themselves, their time, or their money, to enhance their limited freedom! Risking one's life is a true patriot. Giving one's life is true patriotism.
Parades do nothing. They are for personal fun.
I suppose I still remember my old boot camp drill instructor who was a nut for perfect marching and cleanliness.
To this day I could march with others similarly trained in near perfect unison--meaning nothing much except for the personal pride.
I could also do the nine count and the sixteen count manual of arms with a one-time practice after many years.
These things have little to do with patriots.
Music is the worst effort to show patriotism. Music is for personal enjoyment.
Go to the VA hospitals, etc., and spend your vacation helping assist them. That is not patriotism, but is as close as most of us now will get.
Don't put that in the newspaper either!
I am sure you live what you preach here. Are you with the USO welcoming the troops back from the war zones? Or are you one of those don't do as I do but do as I say do kind of guy?
I did forget to buy an ad in the paper to publish what I have done!
Oh, I "remembered." I rode my Harley with six merican flags, and I protested by throwing rocks at some churches!
Next year bring your IPod (don't forget your earphones) and watch your fellow citizens celebrate Independence Day.
Good grief!! What a moroon.
Let me direct you to John Munford's photo gallery on this web site of the parade.
Uh, did I just see 2 or 3 or (gasp!) 4 floats? Not one. And no matter your views on rock, heavy metal and rap, they were all born here in the good 'ol USA. How patriotic is that, Carol?
We have one high school in this city of 34 thousand, Carol. (No offense SMHS) Just how many bands do you think we should have? I think the Boston Pops was already booked, if memory serves me right.
Tell me, how many places do YOU go around here for an hour and 20 minutes of FREE entertainment and FREE goodies that were all presented to YOU by volunteers thru their blood and sweat and time and effort out of the kindness of their hearts for the benefit of this community, Carol? Maybe to drum up a little business for themselves at the same time, Carol? You know, business that provides jobs and tax income and benefits to those of us who live here in these most difficult times, Carol? How patriotic is that, dearie?
And, Carol, how about the KPTCB volunteers that swept the parade route clean after YOU left to go home to your air conditioned house? And the Public Works and Police and Fire and EMT's and CVB and Recreation employees that put all this on for YOUR benefit, Carol? The ones that got to work on this holiday, sweetie. How patriotic is that?
So, beloved neighbor and resident of Peachtree City, Georgia, I guess you really did miss the true meaning of patriotic music, didn't you? It was all around you today. You just were so blinded by your pettiness you didn't see it or hear it, I guess. Too bad for you. The rest of us had a glorious time and were so thankful for this small tradition that has been here for gloing on twenty(?) years now. We gathered and clapped and laughed and chatted and ooohed and ahhhh'ed and saw the smiles on our children's faces.
That, Carol, is what most of us define as a love of this country. I hope, some day, you find this to be true in your life, too. Just listen more closely and you will hear the music, also. Happy 4th of July.
I was going to respond but then read the existing responses and felt quite satisfied.
Only thing I'll add, is that it's fine to desire "patriotic music", but best action is likely to do something about it. Put a float in next year's parade perhaps. Nothing is stopping you.
Happy 4th all.
Certain that we will have more political riders and walkers then. Not sure that will be patriotic enough for Carol, but politics will be the theme next year. We will know who the Republican candidate for President will be, some fool will run against Westmoreland and the 3 on Fayette County Commission will have scads of opponents.
How about a float where Frady, Horgan and Hearn are hung in effigy over a road that leads to nowhere and all the opponents march along playing jazz - sort of like a New Orleans funeral celebration. How about that? Too much?
Ok, how about Frady, Horgan and Hearn in prison orange jump suits picking up trash along the parade route and the opponents could dress up like prison guards. And the spectators could supply the trash by throwing candy and other things back at them.
Can you fit one of those dunking tanks on a parade float?
BTW, how come we haven't heard from anyone about running for PTC city council this year? Isn't this about the time that candidates emerge?
I nominate Mudcat for the parade planning commission. Sounds like a roaring good time.
The Fayette County Issues Tea Party float continuously looped these favorites over speakers on each side of the float throughout our travel down the parade route, sorry you missed it...
