GOP race for school board: Anti-Todd email rumor traced to Smola

Bob Todd (L) and Janet Smola (R), members of the Fayette County Board of Education.

The Great HighGrove Redistricting Rumor turns out to be a case of one sitting Board of Education member — Janet Smola — politicking against the reelection of her fellow board member, Bob Todd.

Smola’s charge of a stealth redistricting plan — which Todd calls a “bold-faced lie” — took electronic wings via Peachtree City attorney and HighGrove resident Doug Warner.

In that email, Warner — the attorney for the Peachtree City Airport Authority and the senior law partner of state Rep. Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City) — wrote to his fellow HighGrove residents that Fayette County Board of Education incumbent Dr. Bob Todd was a proponent of sending HighGrove subdivision students to other schools.

That allegation actually came from Todd’s fellow school board member Janet Smola, a Todd antagonist who is often on the winning side of the 3-2 votes that occur on the board.

Warner’s email stated that Todd had “plans to move both HighGrove and Whitewater (subdivisions) to Whitewater High School and Middle School (rather than remaining at schools in the Starr’s Mill complex). All of HighGrove should be voting against Bob Todd in favor of Charlie Cave.”

Cave apparently is Smola’s choice to replace Todd.

Asked about the copy of the email he received, HighGrove resident Pat Hinchey said he spoke with several residents, then called Todd, who told him Warner’s assertion was untrue.

Hinchey said he then spoke with Warner, who told him he had received information from school board member Janet Smola that Todd had a preference to have the students move and that if Hinchey had any questions on the matter he could call Smola or outgoing school Superintendent John DeCotis.

Hinchey then spoke with Smola, who confirmed what Warner had said in the email. Then Hinchey called DeCotis, and was told that DeCotis was not aware of any plans by Todd to redistrict either HighGrove or Whitewater subdivisions.

Another portion of Warner’s email referenced Todd’s vote in 2007 in opposition to the elementary school redistricting, saying, “The 3-2 vote to approve the (redistricting) plan kept HighGrove students at Starr’s Mill.”

DeCotis told Hinchey that Todd’s voted for or against the 2007 redistricting had no bearing on HighGrove since the subdivision’s children under the redistricting plan would not have moved to another school.

Contacted Tuesday, Warner acknowledged Smola’s statement that Todd had a preference to have the HighGrove students move to Whitewater. Warner said board Chairman Terri Smith also said Todd had made previous statements to that effect.

Concerning the comments made by Smola, Warner said he had known Smola for a long time and knew her to be credible. He said Smola told him in “no uncertain terms” that Todd on numerous occasions had noted his preference that one or both subdivisions be redistricted.

Warner said that he was not trying to get into the school board race. He said the schools at the Starr’s Mill complex and those at the Goza Road complex (where Whitewater is located) are both excellent schools, adding that he simply did not want his children to have to change schools.

Meantime, Todd’s opponent Charlie Cave has not responded to multiple attempts by The Citizen to be interviewed. Cave also has skipped the only public event during which candidates were questioned by citizens.

The Fayette County Republican Primary will be held July 20. Early voting is ongoing.

Of all the things Janet Smola and Terri Smith have done

this might be the lowest.

Janet Smola's trashy power grab is telling of her character. Just a nice little lie planted in someone's ear and no one would be the wiser. Let this foolish person do her dirty work for her. She must have had quite a laugh.

The problem was Ms Smola under estimated the intelligence of Highgrove parents. Among them Mr Hinchey.

I hope all are aware by now that Joy Clark, who accused Dr Todd of ethics violations, is the sister of a developer partner of Terry Smith's husband.

It seems the under estimation of intelligence and lack of respect for parents privacy is still in full swing. In the past few days, other email addresses given to schools as a way to get updates on the children been saturated with Charlie Cave campaign material and half truths about Dr Todd. This time Neil Sullivan is the stooge.

Dr Todd had access to the same emails, but would never abuse the public's trust.

The entire election Dr Todd has conducted his campaign the way he has lived his life, honest and admirable.

It is unfortunate others have also conducted their campaign the same way they have lived.

These people are desperately trying to sell you the doctored background of a man that never went to college! They want you to believe he was an financial analyst for Delta Airlines and a bank guru. Do you for a minute think this is possible?

Smith/Smola voted to outsource teacher's job Todd/Key AGAINST!

Tonight this should come up again. Smola and Smith voted last week to hire a green card alien for a Fayette county teacher's job over local teachers!

Dr Todd and Marion Key voted against it. It was tie vote, so the amigos are hoping to have the extra person to get it done tonight!

The position is a drama teacher at McIntosh. Supposedly, the BOE Human Resources, can't find anyone in Georgia that is qualified! Nor, apparently the whole of the USA!

BOE Human Resources contacted a headhunter company that specialises in aliens. They want $10,000 for their treasured Green card alien. Starting salary is $36,000 +/-. This is suppose to be a great deal because they won't have to pay for insurance.

When you outsource...you loose control. Everyone knows that. On top of it, the headhunter company is paid the $36,000. and the teacher is paid whatever the headhunter company wants to give them. So, you aren't getting a teacher who is worth $36,000. You are getting one that will work for much less and the headhunter company will get the rest.

Are the BOE human resource person,Smith and Smola trying to tell us our out of work teachers are so unfit, we have to go to another country to get an employee?

This is the biggest stab in the back to the teachers! If you let them get away with it on something as mundane as a drama teacher, you have opened the floodgates!

I respect our teachers and apparently Dr Todd and Marion Key do as well.
We have plenty of out of work teachers to choose from. Who the H owns this headhunter company anyway? I googled them and couldn't find them.

For years I have taken my business away from companies that send their customer service lines to India. One, I'm not giving free English lessons when I want help. Two, these companies customer service is a joke! Three, the money is going ...OUT OF COUNTRY...not to come back.

Now, some on the BOE, want to go it one better and hire aliens to teach our children. I know many teacher's salaries were victimized by the overbuilding of schools along the bypass, but this is even worse!

I never intended my tax dollars to be spent this way! Do you guys want to vote in Charlie Cave that will rubber stamp everything these two do? Or do you want a real man and a gentleman who will stand up to them? A man who values our teachers and is not willing to put our children's future in just anyone's hands.

This may be it

While it is not illegal to lie and say, I think Dr Todd would vote to redistrict ...x.y.z

It is VERY ILLEGAL to lie and say as a BOE member, I have heard him say, he would redistrict,! VERY VERY illegal!

That, in essence is using your official office to lie and tamper with the election! And that aint no heard it through the grapevine!

Something could come out of this

if citizen press the issue and request the DA investigate.

Given the present predicament our present judges have found themselves in, it is possible one of our new Judges could be, Judge Samms. I wonder what his opinion on this would be?

Smola resign?

Janet Smola will never resign; she doesn't have the morals or ethics to let go of power. She's currently got Neil Sullivan writing bogus letters to the editor and sending out emails that are low on facts, but filled to the brim with Smola/Smith talking points.

Classless and won't resign

What would be really funny is, if fed up people would start posting these emails in the citizen!

It would quickly become apparent email recipients from different areas are told vastly different things! This is to prey on the insecurities of each area and the fact that most working people don't have time to check it out.

Well, I didn't need the recent disclosure, but it helps me to validate my choice of Dr. Todd for BOE. There is little more I hate than for people to lie about another to try and discredit them...that is just plain viscous and totally uncalled for.

BOE Passes Ordinance With A Majority of Two

Sorry to say this Steve B. but it seems that the Smith/Smola tag team just passed an ordinance with a majority of 2 votes. Like an end run by our congress and President. See www.SPLOSTPOLL.com. "Bullies pass bully ordinance."
They also started outsourcing teachers from another country who's not a citizen here without informing the other board members. Sorry many GA teachers out of work, try London, they have a shortage of teachers there.
At least you and we other folks have wised up and connected the dots to the SPLOST-WFB-BOE-Developers- and incumbent commissioners like Smith and Maxwell. Unlike Mike King we're not stuck in the past hot tub time machine bashing Steve Brown and Bush for our current situation. Let's stay on point and current. "It's the developers stupid"...

School redistricting rumor and bad side of politics

Relying on Janet Smola and Terri Smith as a "source" of information is a huge mistake. Doug Warner is a proven trouble maker.

If you are tired of the Gang of Three at the Board of Education, cast a vote for Dr. Bob Todd.

It is very predictable that the special interests would try to defeat Dr. Todd, Steve Brown and Allen McCarty with rumors and false statements. Smola, Terri Smith, Jack Smith and Eric Maxwell certainly cannot run a campaign based upon their records.

I think you have a point

I'm not sure Mike King is correct. Brown has a point with questioning why anyone needs to spread vicious rumors against Dr. Todd. Then we find out it was a board member from a three-member majority that is not well thought of who began the rumor.

Jack Smith's own supporters have frowned on the the paid advertisements with the statements that are, let's just say, less than factual about his challenger.

Here's an interesting exercise for you. Print out letters of Steve Brown and Jack Smith for each week. Put them side-by-side and compare.

Smith's letters are mainly about discrediting Brown. Brown's letters are mainly about Smith's voting record on some pretty big issues.

The fact that Smith hasn't made a single comment about his all expense paid trip to China after giving the company tax credits makes him look like he's dodging. I've only seen half a sentence about the 2009 SPLOST that he approved. Smith has never really explained the votes in favor of mass transit either.

The thing that sticks out the most is how Smith is furiously trying to build himself up in his letters. You get the feeling he has no confidence in the public's perception of his last four years. That's probably why he feels he has to beat Brown down rather than push his record or talk about the county's future.

Brown appears a lot more confident with his positions.

Smola: DirtyTricks as Usual

From the very beginning of her shady career, Janet Smola has been hooking and a crooking with this type of tactic starting with her "Keep Woody Working". What is with these politicians? Do they have some secret wish to get caught videotaped like the pony ride in the subdivision? If Janet really believed something about Bob Todd, why not be up front about it? Instead she feeds it to a slimy lawyer and neither one of them has the nerve to publicly confront Bob Todd. Write a letter to the Editor. Nah, that would be too honorable for Smola. Go with the dirty tricks Janet.

And we keep re-electing clowns like Smola. We deserve what we get.

In this case, Bob Todd gets my vote. Pat Hinchey has some guts, too. Good for him for following up on this.

Smola should resign

I know a lot of nice and honest people that voted for Janet Smola...all thinking she wanted to do the "right thing" for our schools and students.

She has betrayed "public trust" and she needs to resign or BE voted off the school board....one or the other.

These are difficult times, and we do not need a politican on the school board. We need dedicated and honest people who put the schools and children first.

DO THE RIGHT THING AND RESIGN! NOW!

Should she and Terri Smith resign? Yes! But I doubt either will.

No doubt they are trying to figure out what kind of spin to put on this and how gullible the parents are.

Are you personally sure and certain of the morals involved? If so, so what?
Are you also talking about a "letter" a lawyer distributed that you say was written by this person? So what?

There are so many things we could criticize that are evident, I see no reason for this!

Headed Me Off At The Pass

We had this story posted for a week as a result of an anonymous email that validates this story. However Mr. Hinchey convinced me that it was inaccurate and he didn't like blogs that could have such liberty to spread these kind of rumors. Now it's in the front page of the Citizen. I considered his objection and posted that I would remove the story in 24 hours out of concern for his and others reputation and I did. Screw that, next time I will stick to my sources and hold my guns . You guys are running scared and it's going to snowball because we have more " so called rumors" developing and confirming. Thanks Citizen for printing this story. www.SPLOSTPOLL.com

That's what happened to Clayton County. Can you imagine in your wildest dreams that magnitude of a debacle happening to Fayette County Schools? Well Joy Clark has that kind of an Alice In Wonderland fantasy and spouted it out accusing Bob Todd of bringing us down to that level. Losing accreditation

Hey, that's nothing:

Power Of Thought

The middle of another year much like some others
Complications abound with health and technology.
Where are we going and do we care who it bothers?
Nearly all of us need constant serious psychology.

The earth is getting full with our current situation,
Where the constant greed has no realistic good end,
Our need for more has increased our consumption.
Sorting problems is easy, where to do we them send?

Theories of people management have mostly all been tried,
From clannish endeavors, Grecian, Roman, Persian error,
We now divide by tribes. agreement we all will not abide.
How long will it be until this great power slides into terror?

We waste our time here with trivial pursuits of electronics
While our government sits up nights providing our next tonics.

Two dangers

There are two distinct dangers here; The first and foremost is a slimeball attorney who has been known for decades for playing both ends again'st the middle. The second is Janet Smola, who should never been relected after her illicit relationship with a former school board chair became known. There is no one to blame here but the voters of Fayette who ignored the scandal and various other warning signs.

Best wish's to Dr. Todd in his bid for reelection.

It is a little snarly however to try and do it politically (with politicians) instead of at Board of Ed meetings!!
Are all courthouse connected people feeling they have certain powers and intelligence and privileges we don't have?

What is this other Peyton place stuff about with a board member and a school super?
