Candidate Huddleston: ‘New ideas, a new vision, and old-school values’

[Editor’s note: The following email was received from the candidate’s representative July 5. The announcement is being treated as a letter to the editor.]

Sheila Huddleston has no personal agenda. She simply wants to give back to Fayette County. That is why she is running for the Post 2 seat on the Fayette County Board of Commissioners in the July 31 Republican Primary. Early voting in the primary begins July 9, 2012.

“I have no personal agenda,” said Huddleston. “I simply want to give back to this community. I believe in service, and this is one way I can serve the people of Fayette County.”

Service is nothing new to Huddleston. A Fayette County attorney, 20 percent of Huddleston’s work is pro bono, and she volunteers at The Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Store, which is operated through Holy Trinity Catholic Church where she attends church.

“Fayette County needs strong leadership right now, and someone who can think things through and make the right decision for the citizens of this county,” said Huddleston, who is seeking to fill the seat that was held by Herb Frady. Frady chose not to seek re-election this year.

Huddleston is committed to bringing new ideas, a new vision, and old-school values to the Board of Commissioners. “I want to be the voice of the people on the Board,” said Huddleston.

Among her key issues, Huddleston is committed to fiscal responsibility, accountability, and ethical leadership. “I will work for a zero-based budget in Fayette County,” said Huddleston. “I don’t want to see your tax dollars wasted.”

Huddleston is also against the West Fayette Bypass and does not support the transportation tax. “The West Bypass is a waste of money,” said Huddleston. “It goes nowhere, and in reality, it impedes traffic.”

Huddleston believes it is time for the five commissioners to work together as a team for the good of Fayette County. “Together we can work to preserve the quality of life here that we have all come to expect. Together we can keep Fayette County the special place we all love and call home. I want to serve this county, and I am asking for everyone’s support in my bid to do that.”

Huddleston moved to Fayette County in 1991, and operates her law office in Fayette County. Her son graduated from McIntosh High School and is now a student at Georgia Southern University. Huddleston grew up in Alabama where she graduated from Gardendale High School. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida and earned her law degree at John Marshall Law School here in Atlanta.

I hope everyone is paying attention

Sheila is a very nice person and I wish her a wonderful future.

There are some points that have to be raised. First, where has Sheila been? David Barlow has been in the trenches week after week for years battling the Frady-Hearn-Horgan majority on the Board of Commissioners. Sheila has not sat through an entire meeting the since she qualified to run. After she wound up in the runoff, she missed workshop meeting the same week.

When Jack Smith and Mayor Ken Steele lied to us about not supporting mass transit in Fayette County, David Barlow worked tirelessly to get them out of office and the voters responded. Steele spoke out in favor of the TSPLOST and ridiculed me and people like David Barlow who fought the deal. The voters responded, again.

I asked David Barlow to tape our meetings and post them so people could see what is going on. He did it a no charge. I asked David Barlow to drive hundreds of miles all over metro Atlanta to video tape the TSPLOST debates and forums so the people in the metro area could see and hear for themselves what was going on. He gladly did this for everyone without complaint at his own personal expense.

Seriously, ask what has Sheila Huddleston done? She never voiced an opinion on anything until weeks AFTER qualified to run for the seat. You know the adage about your actions speaking louder than your words. Barlow is chock full of action and Huddleston has no actions and did not even utter a word until after she qualified to run.

Everybody is now talking about the disturbing alliance between Sheila Huddleston and incumbent Lee Hearn.

Lee Hearn's record is very clear: 1. As the county's Public Works Director, he was written up for poor performance on numerous occasions. He was severely reprimanded for misuse of a county credit card in order to thwart county procedure. He resigned in light of what many believed would be his inevitable termination.

2. Hearn has consistently supported deficit spending. To make matters worse, he has actually voted to increase expenditures when revenues were drifting down.

3. Hearn is one of the most ardent supporters on building the West Fayetteville Bypass. The road to nowhere has wasted tens of millions of our tax dollars. (It was Hearn, as Public Works Director, who said the East Fayetteville Bypass was our number one priority, but he kept pushing the West Fayetteville Bypass as an elected official.) It was later found out that Hearn's relatives own a large number of acres of undeveloped land near the West Fayetteville Bypass.

4. The Board was presented with a resolution to ask that Fayette County be removed from all regional and state mass transit plans. Lee Hearn along with Commissioners Frady and Horgan voted it down.

5. Hearn voted in favor of items that NEVER appeared on a public meeting agenda - keeping the public in the dark. One item was a tower lease that had five years remaining on the current contract. The new lease was not bid out and it was worth in the neighborhood of $1 million. Hearn voted in favor of pay raise for employees that did not appear on an agenda. That pay raises came at a time when the county was deficit spending and pulling funds from the reserves just to meet obligations.

6. For the last five years, the county has paid the administrative, equipment and other Fire Service costs from the general fund. This is in direct contradiction to the fire district agreements made with the Peachtree City and Fayetteville. In an act of desperation, Hearn made the comment that everything was funded from Fire Fund - which was true, after it was transferred from the general fund.

7. Hearn had a chance to de-fund the West Fayetteville Bypass and use the funds for county debt and tax relief, but he voted it down.

8. Hearn appointed one of his relatives to the Board of Elections to oversee his re-election bid. He lied to the public at a commission meeting, say the relative was "a friend of his from church."

Sheila Huddleston has made it very clear she is supporting the Hearn team and has aligned her campaign with the Hearn campaign. Is this what you want for the next four years?

We know what we had for the last four years did not work and was not in the best interest of the citizens. Repeating those mistakes for another four years would be ridiculous.

Yes, Greg Clifton, who had never attended a single Fayetteville City Council meeting in his life, defeated Ken Steele. Of course, that doesn't matter to totally unprincipled egomaniacs as long as the never-shown-up candidate defeats a hated rival. When the situation is reversed...who cares about principles as long as "my guy" wins?

You have no standards besides "I'll support anyone who is an enemy of my enemy." That's why your term as Mayor in PTC was such a huge failure.

First off, I was one of those who went on record here as saying that it was time Steele to go and that Clifton seemed liked a good enough replacement. It's also easy for me to say that since I don't live in Fayetteville and don't have to deal with the aftermath, but I sure didn't judge Clifton's campaign on how many(ZERO) city meetings he attended. If people are that stupid(and yes they are) that meeting attendance or writing letters to the editor is what they base their vote on, they deserve what they get.

I'm glad that you and your acolytes are so quick to show your total hypocrisy of how anything you candidate does or doesn't do is perfectly fine and anyone opposed is subjected to the scorched-earth BS that I have seen over and over and OVER.

I had to LOL when you told Morgan that you ignore the "personal attacks." You have practiced and sometimes perfected that since before you ever got elected non-stop and you're now 2-2 for elections and it's all based around personally attacking any and everyone who dares think otherwise from your exalted opinion, even though you have quite a history of changing your mind completely and flip-flopping so much that Romney is jealous.

I have a very strong feeling your election record is going to slide to 2-3 the next time around, especially if the other commissioners vote to make you chair.

Huddleston Website answers far from clear

In responding to how to promote economic development in Fayette County, candidate Huddleston said in paragraph 2 "We need to be innovative and come up with a new plan, by revising he Land Use Plan and figuring out how far we are from being competitive." Then she said "by following the Land Use Plan that was adopted in 1985, Fayette County will not only have the opportunity to manage its growth in a manner that will accomodate future need, but will maintain the unique character of Fayette County."

While she praises the 1985 Land Use Plan, she says it needs to be revised, but is not specific as to exactly how she would revise it.

In paragraph 3, she says that the county needs to reduce taxes, but provides no specific method to do so.

In paragraph 4, Ms. Huddleston says that we need to go back to the guidelines of the Land Use Plan, but she implies that she is referring to the Land Use Plan, since she makes no mention of any specific revisions.

Finally, in paragraph 5, she says what all voters want to hear "Keeping taxes low to bring either new business into our community or to help the small business person open and start a new business is key." Again, no formula on how to reduce taxes, much less, without reducing services.

If Ms. Huddleston would come up with innovative, specific ideas as to how the Land Use Plan should be revised rather than referring to following the 1985 plan, voters could get some idea as to where she stands. Also, there are many specific issues that could be discussed instead of generically reducing taxes. The county has many different budgetary areas...public safety, public works, water department, spending wastes, etc.,

Peter Pfeifer's silly blog re. Huddleston

Gosh Peter, I would have thought a person with Sheila's qualifications could figure out how to sign in and post her own comments. Lucky for her that she has you as her campaign manager to guide her in such difficult and confusing matters.

Now, since she and you cherry-picked only one small segment of our dialogue, I will post all of it so that everyone can see how evasive and non-responsive Sheila has been in all our attempts to find out just who she is and why did she decide to run for a seat on the Board of Commissioners.

Hopefully, Cal Beverly and Pat Cooper will weigh in on on this matter.

We deserve to know who the candidates are and what they stand for in order that we gain an informed decision about them.

We know virtually nothing about Sheila Huddleston and that troubles me and a lot of others that I know.

More to follow Peter!

Huddleston doesn't file campaign finance reports - fined twice

Redacted copy of complaint electronically filed with the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission 8/5/12.

Sheila Huddleston, a Peachtree City attorney admitted to the Georgia Bar in 2010, is in a run-off election to be held on 8/21/12 for Post 2 of the Fayetteville Board of Commissioners.

According to information contained on your campaign commission website, she has failed to file campaign finance reports for the calendar year 2011 which was due 6/14/12, and a report due 6/30/12. She has been fined twice for this omission - your invoice dated August 2, 2012.

Because of her failure to file campaign reports, the citizens of Fayette County have been denied their right to determine who is supporting her candidacy and other important information. Furthermore, there is virtually no information available about her - see her campaign website http://electsheilahuddleston.com/contact.html

Her place of employment information is: Huddleston Law Group LLC, P.O. Box 2101, Peachtree City, Ga. 30269.

The run-off election date is fast approaching and we may not be able to discover anything about her candidacy because she has failed to file required reports in accordance with Georgia statutes.

On behalf of the citizens of Fayette County, I urge you to contact her and demand that she immediately comply with the disclosure laws.

I have completed your Complaint Form and will have it notarized and sent to you by regular mail on Monday August 6, 2012.

Respectfully,

Jim Richter

On another subject, I find it very interesting that Sheila Huddleston, Scott Hollowell and Susan Stopford joined the Fayette County Republican Party ON THE SAME DAY, 6/20/12. Now, that is not just a coincidence in my opinion.

Neither I nor anyone else I know, remembers ever seeing any of these three individuals at a GOP function, county commissioner meeting or budget session before 6/20/12. Did they all have an epiphany experience on the same day?

Attendance at Commission Meetings, etc

I'm absolutely amazed at how much importance many seem to put on attendance at County Commission meetings and equate it to ability to serve as a commissioner. Phoney Baloney! Means little or nothing and has zero to do with a candidates ability to listen to or read proposals and situations, analyze them and come up with common sense solutions and decisions--absolutely no connection! As proof, I offer the fact that current commissioners attend most meetings and some are absolutely incapable of making smart decisions! So I say to voters out there, don't necessarily hang your future on any candidate based on attendance at prior meetings--means little. New blood might be best.

Meetings do not concern you, does Land Grab?

Candidates who support?? – Land Use Plan – something to consider, what this really means to a property owner; Possible Land Grab! Do your research on land use plans. I did!!

By now, most Americans have heard of sustainable development but are largely unaware of Agenda 21.

. . . . In a nutshell, the plan calls for governments to take control of all land use and not leave any of the decision making in the hands of private property owners. It is assumed that people are not good stewards of their land and the government will do a better job if they are in control. Individual rights in general are to give way to the needs of communities as determined by the governing body. Moreover, people should be rounded up off the land and packed into human settlements, or islands of human habitation, close to employment centers and transportation. Another program, called the Wild Lands Project spells out how most of the land is to be set aside for non-humans.

The Truth & Land Grab

I know about Agenda 21 and also know that some GA cities have already signed up for it. I think it's despicable but what has the UN done lately that was smart and truly "United"??

Dear Jim, from Sheila

Jim, Sheila sent me this in response to your last email to her. It addresses the concerns you expressed. She doesn't have a log in to post here, but I do.

Jim;

Just to let you know, my practice is a general practice and I also do real estate transactions. So, do you need an attorney ? As a special rate only for you I will cut my rate to $300 per hour.

With respect to having a business license, I am not required to have one since I am a 1099 independent contractor, you silly boy. You can call Fayette County to dispel your concerns. For your convenience, their number is 770-305-5413.

Thanks again for your support and concern for my wellbeing. I will continue to keep you in my prayers.

Real Estate transactions

I can live without voting for someone whose career involves real estate transactions in Fayette County. Good career, not so good for a county commissioner. Had enough of that. Just my opinion here. Thanks for the information.

Your answer Jim

Have you tried to look at her Website? http://www.electsheilahuddleston.com
She is very clear on issues and where she stands and she has also posted the missing "who is behind me" disclosure statement and other information as well http://www.electsheilahuddleston.com/disclosure.html If you would actually read it and quit taking everything you read off the blogs for the truth you might be surprised to find out what some folks are thinking and saying isn’t really the actual facts. There are other reason for why things happen and if you read the CCRD she posted it explains the late file information. I have to say wow if this really all you can dig up you don't have much there. Also hummm person with a couple years living here vs someone that has lived here for 20 plus years all of a sudden has the counties best interest in hand let's don't forget those two bankruptcies and those poor folks he defaulted on. Guess if the county gets in serious trouble old Dave would know how to get them out of it Chapter 7.

How is Ms. Huddleston unique?

At the commissioners debate in Fayetteville, I heard Ms. Huddleston speak out against the West Bypass and transportation issues. I have not heard how she differs on more specific issues from fellow candidates Oddo, Ognio, and Barlow. To me, she seemed to be focusing on generalities. The WFB and transportation issues were part of the 2010 campaign platforms of Commissioners Brown and McCarty. What she needs to do is specifically point out where she is unique and different on current county problems where she has new ideas. Otherwise, she will simply be taking votes away from those candidates, forcing a runoff election.

She is unique because her record is clean - so far

She didn't waste time and money on the WFB like Smith did. She didn't mismanage her own finances to the point of 2 bankruptcies like Barlow did. Of course she may have done something and now that she's in the spotlight as Barlow fades into irrelevance, our very own investigative reporter is bound to turn up any dirt that there is. No, not you John - I mean Eric Maxwell.
