The Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats jumped out to a 19-point lead only to see the Lumpkin County Indians tie the game in the fourth quarter before the home team got a late score for a 42-35 win.

Lawrence Tillman put OLM on the scoreboard less than 30 seconds into the game with a 76-yard touchdown run. A few minutes later Jameson Vest threw a short pass to Jordan Thomas that turned into a 70-yard scoring play and a 12-0 lead.

Vest connected with Keagan Jordan on a 24-yard touchdown in the second quarter before Lumpkin County struck for two touchdowns to cut the lead to five. Vest scored on a 41-yard run late in the period, and Tillman’s run for the two-point conversion made it a 27-14 game at halftime.

The visitors scored on a 70-yard quarterback keeper early in the third, but the Bobcats answered when Vest scored from 19 yards out and also ran in the two-pointer. Lumpkin County got two more touchdowns to tie the game with 6:56 to go in regulation.

But after the two teams traded turnovers, OLM got the winning score from Vest on a 16-yard run. He tacked on the extra point to give the Bobcats a seven-point margin with 2:45 left.

The Indians got a decent kickoff return for the first time in the game, as Vest’s six previous kickoffs went into the end zone. But the Bobcats’ defense held and the team took over on downs in the final minute.

OLM travels to Terrell County next Friday.
