Henry “Clyde” Pate, Jr., age 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Fayetteville, Ga. on October 1, 2014, after a brave battle with cancer.

He was born March 15, 1936 in Anderson, S.C., the son of late Henry “Clyde”, Sr. and Eleanor Pate and was the oldest of 4 brothers. He attended the University of South Carolina and served in the South Carolina National Guard.

Clyde started working for Delta Air Lines, Inc. in 1961 in Columbia, S.C. He transferred to the Atlanta Airport in 1971 and became a Customer Service Supervisor of the Red Coat passenger service agents and eventually of the Concourse B gates/ticket counters. He retired from Delta in 1992.

Clyde is survived by his wife of 431⁄2 years, Margaret “Peggy” Pate, daughter Debbie and son-in-law Blu Allen of Fayetteville, daughter Anne and son-in-law Michael Lewis of Little Rock, Ark., son Kevin and daughter-in-law Tracey Pate of Greenville, N.C. He is also survived by brothers Jerry Pate of Columbia, S.C., Van (Anne) Pate of Charlotte, N.C, and sister-in-law Barbara Hipp of Fayetteville. Clyde was affectionately called “Gindaddy” by 4 grandchildren: Nikki (Matt) Whitfield of McDonough, Matthew McCollum of Fayetteville, Chelsey Allen of Fayetteville, and Cadie Allen of Southern California. Other survivors include many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James “Mallory” Pate of Brevard, N.C. and brother-in-law, David Hipp of Fayetteville, Ga.

Clyde enjoyed playing golf, gardening, reading, collecting and watching his favorite college football team, The South Carolina Gamecocks. He donated his body to Emory University School of Medicine for cancer research. A memorial service is scheduled for November 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the North Fayette Baptist Church, 409 Kenwood Road, Fayetteville, Ga. 30214.
