County officials are looking for residents who wish to display their best scarecrows next to the public plaza and the county’s Administration Building in downtown Fayetteville.

A call has been issued by the Fayette County Public Arts Committee for citizens of all ages to participate. Individuals, families, schools, clubs, businesses, churches and other groups from anywhere in the county are eligible.

The county will place a metal post in the ground for each scarecrow, while all other materials are the responsibility of the participants, who are free to design their creations as they see fit.

Thursday is the day the posts start going into the ground, just in time for “Scarecrow Construction Weekend.” All entries must be completed and secured to a post by Monday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.

Participants must register in advance and pay a $10 entry fee to cover costs. Registration forms can be found on the county’s web site (www.fayettecountyga.gov) or at the county clerk’s office, 140 Stonewall Avenue, Suite 100 in Fayetteville. The registration deadline is Friday at 5 p.m.

All entries will be judged on originality of design, creativity, durability, and general appearance and presentation. The top three will be recognized at the Nov. 13 meeting of the Fayette County Board of Commissioners. First prize is $150 and the title of 2014 Scarecrow Grand Master.

Participants must monitor the condition of their entries the entire time they are on display, which is until Nov. 2.
