Chili Fest is today at Old Courthouse Lawn, Fayetteville. Set up begins at 8 a.m. Cooking begins at 9 a.m.,with samples served at noon. Sponsored by Fayetteville Main Street and Fayette Shriners.

The annual luminary sale to benefit J.C. Booth Middle School band program is again underway. Band students are selling luminary kits for $5. Each kit contains six bags, six candles and sand. Proceeds from the sale are used for instruments, music and other program expenses. Traditional luminary lightings are on Christmas Eve, with many neighborhoods participating. Bags, weighted with sand and holding a lit candle, are placed along street curbs, walkways and driveways at about six foot intervals. The effect of the glowing lights is spectacular. The Clayton State Film and Digital Media Industry Open House is today at 10 a.m.  at the Sandy Creek High School auditorium.More than 200 people have already registered for the event. Individuals wishing to attend must preregister by calling 678- 466-5050. The Clayton State Center for Continuing Education is open Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Open House will focus on Clayton State’s new Film and Digital Media Training Program which begins in February 2014. The training program, which consists of two, 12-week sessions, is modeled after a very successful program in New Mexico.

The Freedom Fund Banquet Committee is planning its 16th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet, The banquet is scheduled for today at 6 p.m. at the Wyndham Peachtree Hotel in Peachtree City, This year’s banquet theme is “Uniting Citizens Through Diversity and Inclusion.” The keynote speaker will be Shirley Sherrod. Pumpkin Festival/Fayette Market Day/Costume Contest and Trick or Treat on Main Street is today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Fayetteville. Join your neighbors at the Gazebo in downtown Fayetteville, where vendors with homemade/homegrown produce and merchandise sell their products to the public in an open-air marketplace. Then, hang around to trick or treat on Main Street. Dog Costume Contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. Trick or Treat will be 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Healing Bridge Clinic will host a fundraiser, the Spooktacular Golf Cart Scavenger Hunt from 9 a.m. to noon at The Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center  Hotel in Peachtree City. The cost to participate will be $100 per cart. Your team must provide your own golf cart and have a camera. There will be many prizes awarded for the first three finishing teams as well as prizes for best costumes and the best decorated golf cart. The annual “House of Clues” event will be hosted by the Optimist Club of Peachtree City in conjunction with the Peachtree City’s Fire Department Haunted House. The non-scary “House of Clues” is based on the board game “Clue” with children going from room to room collecting clues to solve the mystery of who did it, in which room, with what!  Children participate in “fun” activities and collect prizes in each room.  Children are guided through the rooms by “Detectives” from our Starr’s Mill High School Octagon Club & Peachtree City Youth Council.
The House of Clues is for children ages 3 years to 10 years and the cost is $5.per child.  Parents are free and encouraged to participate with their children.  The event will be held at the Peachtree City Fire House #81 at 110 Paschall Rd. and opens at 7 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. The Optimist Club will also provide a concession stand with hot dogs, chips, soft drinks and homemade hot apple cider.  All funds raised from the event will stay in Peachtree City/Fayette County to help the “Youth”.  For more information contact: Nancy Britton at 770-301-7588 or Terry Ernst at 404-798-3789.

Books Down South, a festival for readers and writers is today at the former Rivers Elementary School at Sandy Creek Road and Veterans Parkway. Authors will be signing and talking about their latest books. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the festival is free.

A yard sale and community fair is from 10 a.m.  to 5 p.m., at Cornerstone Baptist Church Fall, 640 Ebenezer Church Road, Fayetteville. The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Fitness Center will host the sixth annual Autumn Chase today at Newnan Utilities’ Carl Miller Park in Newnan, Ga. The Autumn Chase Trail Race, which supports the fitness center’s community fitness programs, consists of a 15k (9 miles) and 5k (3.2 miles) race beginning at 8 a.m., a one-mile fun run starting at 9:15 a.m., and a tot trot at 9:30 a.m. Those interested in supporting the event but not participating in the races can enjoy activities for the entire family, including a Kids’ Castle park, sponsor giveaways and more.
 Registration details: $30 registration fee. One-mile fun runners and kids ages 12 and under can participate for $10. Phantom Runner registration fee is $20. The South Metro Rose Society will meet today at 6:30 p.m. at the Heritage Bank at 440 N. Jeff Davis Drive in Fayetteville. All rose growers from novice to expert are invited to attend free of charge. This month’s program features musician, writer, and rosarian, Stephen Hoy, speaking on “Roses by Amateur Hybridizers”. Stephen has been growing roses for over 30 years and boasts over 275 roses in his garden. He is author of The Fragrance of Paradise which chronicles his illness and recovery as a liver transplant survivor. Please join us as Stephen shares his knowledge on his latest hobby, hybridizing roses.  As usual, Master and Consulting Rosarians will be available to answer questions on any rose topic. Dr. Walt Todd, professor at Shorter University of Atlanta, will return to The Carnegie in Newnan from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. to provide another program for the history series, “World War II – Remembering The War”.
Dr. Todd has presented numerous World War II history programs at The Carnegie including: “The Aleutian Islands: The Invasion of Attu”, “Operation Vengeance: The Death of Admiral Yamamoto”, “The Battle of Guadalcanal” and “The Invasion of Japan: The Last Sacrifice?”     Well researched and with a passion for history, Dr. Todd provides a lecture series at The Carnegie that includes a PowerPoint presentation along with a display of weapons and memorabilia from World War II.

Chili Challenge Cookoff is today from 11 a.m. to  3  p.m. Shakerag Knoll, Peachtree City. Contestants vie to win awards for their chili. Winners selected by voting public in attendance and by judges. Event is open to the public.

The public is invited to help celebrate the United States Marine Corps’ 238th birthday today, starting with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 at the Flat Creek Country Club in Peachtree City.
Marines faithfully celebrate the birth of their Corps (Nov. 10, 1775) throughout the world each year.  Locally, the Coweta and Fayette Sergeant Clyde Thomason Medal of Honor Detachment (#1325) of the Marine Corps League has held a birthday ball celebration for members and their guests since their inception four years ago.
This year the detachment would like to invite the public to join them.
The guest speaker will be LtCol David Steele, Commanding Officer of Marine Aircraft Group 49, Detachment Alpha from Robins Air Force Base. LtCol
A highlight of the event is the traditional and ceremonial cutting of the Marine Corps birthday cake with a Marine sword.

The American Cancer Society will host the 11th  Annual Cattle Baron’s Ball today at the Atlanta Regional Airport – Falcon Field. The Cattle Baron’s Ball is the only country western themed gala in the state of Georgia and has raised more than $1.2 million for the American  Cancer Society. Guests are encouraged to wear western attire and can purchase “Baron  Bucks” at the gala to use towards drinks, games and merchandise at the  ball.  Local community-based youth group, Fayette NAACP Youth Council sponsors its 9th Annual Fashion Show Benefit today at 6 p.m. at This Is It Banquet Hall and Event Center located at 105 McIntorsh Crossing, Fayetteville,  to help raise funds for the organization. This year Marshall’s, Rue21 in the Fayetteville Pavilion and Palomas Collection will be exhibitioning their items of clothing at this fashion show. Young men and women will be walking the runway in these garments to showcase each store’s clothing. Talented students from Fayette area schools will also present entertainment for this event. You will experience some great talents presented by gifted artistic young people.The Fayette NAACP Youth Council expect this fashion show to bring in new interests through community exposure and the public to discover the benefits of membership and participation with the organization. This annual fashion show is a way to help our community become aware of the great works and activities sponsored by the Fayette County NAACP Youth Council.

The Peachtree City Garden Club will host its monthly meeting today at 10 a.m. at The Bridge Community Center, 225 Willowbend Rd, Peachtree City. The topic will be: “Bulbs for Georgia Gardens.” Dr. Bodie Pennisi, UGA Dept. of Horticulture Associate Professor and Extension Landscape Specialist, will share her insights on utilizing a wide variety of bulbs in the garden in shrub borders, naturalistic plants, mass displays or in containers. She will talk about the biology of bulbs, propagation and growing conditions. Guests are welcome.

Fayette County Retired Educators meets today, Nov.7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church in the Family Life Center (gym). This is our Scholarship Auction meeting to raise money for a high school senior from one of Fayette County’s schools. FCREA annually gives a $1,500 scholarship to an aspiring educator. The program will feature auctioneer Patty Brown from The Red Belly Rooster Auction House here in Fayetteville. Bring a gift to be auctioned and have fun with us. Fayette County is home to over 1,300 retired educators, and all are welcome to attend our local meetings. Our group welcomes all administrators, teachers, parapros and others who receive their retirement from Teachers Retirement System of Georgia. Retired educators from other counties are also welcome.

Coweta County and its municipalities are developing an update to the Joint Comprehensive Transportation Plan and will be holding an open house to receive citizen input today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Coweta County Fairgrounds located at 275 Pine Road in Newnan.

Holy Trinity Annual Craft Bazaar is today from 9 a.m.  to 6 p.m. A huge selection of handmade crafts including jewelry, wood working, Christmas decorations and many gift ideas.
