Sandra Carter Backus, 72, died of pancreatic cancer in Peachtree City, Ga. on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. She was diagnosed on October 25, 2013.

Sandra Carter Backus was born in Presque Isle, Maine on November 11, 1940, and she graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1957.

Growing up, Sandee was a wonderful dancer, ice skater, and even worked as a roller skating waitress in the 1950ís.

Sandee was a legal secretary in Presque Isle and later in Warner Robins, Ga. She also worked in the legal office at Robins AFB, Ga. She was a church secretary and business manager for four different churches’ two in Alabama and two in Peachtree City.

Sandee’s unconditional love for her husband, children and grandchildren was immeasurable. As the heart of the family, she was a precious example of kindness and joy to everyone she met.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Jackson Connelly Backus, her parents, Milton and Mary Shaw and her brother-in-law, Kenneth Joseph Mahaney (Colleen).

She is survived by her husband, Ben and four children: Susan Backus Olson (Craig) of Layton, Utah; Richard Matthew Backus (Laura) of Cumming, Ga.; Jennifer Backus Day (J. Frank) of Birmingham, Ala.; and Jeffrey Douglas Backus (Dominique) of Birmingham, Ala.; also her sister, Colleen Mahaney of Nashua, N.H.

She had ten grandchildren: Amanda Patricia Olson and Jordan Elizabeth Olson (Susan and Craig) of Layton, Utah; Caroline Patricia Backus and Madison Elizabeth Backus (Matt and Laura) of Cumming, Ga.; Mary Patton Day and J. Franklin Day (Jennifer and J. Frank) of Birmingham, Ala.; Jackson Connelly Backus (deceased), Connelly Elysse Backus, Holland Campbell Backus, and Miller Benjamin Backus (Jeff and Dominique) of Birmingham, Ala.

A Memorial Service will be held at Peachtree City United Methodist Church, 225 Robinson Road, Peachtree City, Ga., on Saturday, November 9, 2013. The visitation will be at 2 p.m. and the service at 3 p.m.
