Another SkillsUSA Georgia Fall Leadership Conference has come and gone with the Sandy Creek High chapter gathering up more awards.

Six students, Noah Jacobs, Cameron King, Amanda Paver, Jade Ponder, Helen Smith and Hope Vanguilder, won the Statesman Award, testing their knowledge of the SkillsUSA organization and leadership.

Three students, Paver, Smith and Dynasti Degouville, also won the Distinguished Statesman Award for advanced knowledge of the SkillsUSA organization and community/civic awareness. Additionally, the Sandy Creek chapter won the Chapter Image Award based on overall chapter spirit, professionalism and conduct during the conference, which was attended by approximately 840 students from chapters throughout Georgia at the Jekyll Island Convention Center Oct. 23-24. This marked the first year of the conference’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Math (STEAM) Challenge Race, in which Sandy Creek took part.

Chapters designed and built a car within a provided parts list, and raced it against 16 other schools in bracketed competition.

“The Creek” car was driven by Omari Collier and powered by Kristopher Davis. Chapter president and SkillsUSA Georgia secretary Kasey Melkonian led students during the two-day event as she took part in running both the general sessions and training exercises for students.

Sandy Creek alumni and former SkillsUSA Georgia officers Macie Giordano and Addie Davis also participated by volunteering their time to work as SkillsUSA Georgia staff where they helped to set up and run events during the conference.
