Need pine straw in your yard? Be careful who you hire to provide it. The Peachtree City Police Department is advising that residents be aware of scams after one homeowner was hit with a bill for $8,400 for materials and labor.

Officers recently responded to a residence where a pine straw company had been working. The service advised the resident that the total bill was $8,400 for the materials and labor for the two days for a lot of approximately one-quarter to one-half-acre, according to a department press release.

Officers advised residents to be careful when getting pine straw installed on their property especially if the person soliciting the work arrives unannounced to solicit for the service. “Generally they quote a cheap price to spread the pine straw.

Usually around $3.50–4 per bale, which is ridiculous because the pine straw costs $3 per bale wholesale. So what they do is just charge you double the number of bales they actually used,” the press release said.

Ensure that you come to an agreement up front on the cost and record it if possible. Call 911 if they are demanding, threatening or suspicious, officers said.
