Playoff action has already begun in all of the higher classifications and the field for the Class A state football playoffs will start next weekend, with one local school in the mix and another that just missed making it.

The Georgia High School Association’s final power rankings, released earlier this week, for the Class A Private category has the Landmark War Eagles in the middle of the pack out of the 16 teams in the playoffs. Our Lady of Mercy (OLM) finished No. 17.

Landmark finished the season with an 8-2 overall mark and a 3-1 record in Region 5-A play. Its’ other loss was to AAA opponent Central-Carrollton.

OLM’s final record was 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the region, losing to ELCA and Landmark. ELCA is 4-6, but all of those wins were region games and all region champions are automatically in the state playoff field regardless of overall record. As the eighth seed in the state playoffs, Landmark will host ninth-seeded Mt. Pisgah next Friday. A win puts Landmark either at home against Christian Heritage or on the road against Calvary Day School.

Last night’s playoff games in other classifications were completed after this edition went to press.
