Patriots, Wildcats and War Eagles move on in football playoffs

There appeared to be a bit of a Thanksgiving hangover when Sandy Creek started their AAAA second round state playoff game with Dalton on Friday night. There were penalties and missed opportunities for Sandy Creek and the very vocal Dalton crowd seemed to make the Catamount's momentum appear even larger than it was. Towards the end of the first quarter, Dalton ran back an interception for a touchdown and for the first time in a long time, Sandy Creek trailed.

The lead was short lived. Antonio Williams and Eric Swinney both scored in the second quarter to give the Patriots a lead. Swinney and Williams both scored again in the third to make the lead 28-7. Chris Williams recorded another sack (his ninth of the season) and the defense held the Catamounts in check for most of the night. Spencer Roberts made an interception late in the game and Delvin Weems followed one play later with a touchdown run. Dalton scored on a big touchdown pass late but did not convert on the two point conversion. The Patriots won 35-13 and will face the Burke County Bears next week.

Over at Whitewater, Glynn Academy struck first but Whitewater answered soon after and then several more times. The answer, as it has been for most of the season, was Kendall Conley. He had all three Whitewater touchdowns in the first half and both in the second half, one after Colton Clemons blocked a punt and the other the game winner with 22 seconds left. Whitewater won 34-27 and will host Allatoona, which knocked off MLK 20-19 tonight, next Friday.

Landmark Christian defeated Calvary Day 10-7. The War Eagles will host First Presbyterian next week.

At Eagle's Landing Christian Academy, the Chargers struck first against the Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats. Mercy answered right away with a touchdown of their own and then couldn't do much against the top ranked team in Class A until late. Rashard Fant and Jameson Vest both had touchdowns in Mercy's 42-14 loss.
