Traffic along Ga. Highway 85 in north Fayetteville was backed-up for approximately 45 minutes Monday afternoon after a man with a medical condition driving southbound crossed into the northbound lanes and struck two vehicles then had his car disabled by plainclothes sheriff’s deputy who witnessed the event.

Sheriff Barry Babb said the driver of the vehicle, whose name has not been released, had a medical condition that caused him to drive erratically.

Babb said the series of events began near 5 p.m. when the plainclothes deputy saw the man driving southbound on Hwy. 85 enter the median and then into the northbound lanes just north of Fayetteville in unincorporated Fayette County.

The man after crossing into northbound lanes struck two vehicles head-on, Babb said. The man’s vehicle was not disabled in the collision and he tried to continue southbound in the northbound lane.

“He kept traveling so the deputy took him,” Babb said of the plainclothes officer who caught up to the vehicle and rammed it to prevent another collision. Babb said noted that other vehicles were traveling northbound in the immediate vicinity.

Though the rate of speed was not immediately known, Babb said neither the erratic driver nor those in the other two vehicles suffered serious injuries. All were transported for medical evaluation.

Babb said no charges have been filed at this time, adding that the erratic way the man was driving appears to have been caused by his medical condition.

Babb said traffic along Hwy. 85 was backed-up for approximately 45 minutes.
