Palmetto house fire claims three lives

Malfunctioning medical equipment has been named as the cause of a house fire Tuesday morning in Palmetto that claimed the lives of three of its occupants.

Though the investigation is continuing, the state fire marshal and Georgia Insurance and Fire Commissioner John Oxendine have concluded that the fire started as a result of malfunctioning medical equipment. Read More»

She's a pretty brave kid

There was a lot more to the Aug. 14 Back to School Bash at Carlton Elementary School than many might have expected. Accompanying the rides, games, food and music was an exhibit of kid-friendly snakes provided by the Cochran Mill Nature Center. Prepping for World Cup 2022

You just can’t keep Bernard Knox and the Palmetto Youth League (PYL) from expanding their reach into the community. The new organization’s most recent endeavor is the summer soccer program held Saturdays at Palmetto Elementary School. Up next will be flag football coming later this summer. May Day the Cops Way coming to Palmetto

The 2nd Annual May Day the Cops Way will be held by the Palmetto Police Department on June 12 at Veteran’s Park from noon until 4 p.m.

The public is invited to attend. Officers and staff will have free activities for the kids along with face painting, safety kits, cotton candy and snow cones, food and drinks.

Veteran’s Park is located on Park Street and Virginia Avenue.

Betty Marylynn Thompson, 80, formerly of Palmetto

Betty Marylynn Thompson, 80, of Williamson, formerly of Palmetto, died April 23, 2010.

She is survived by her husband Edward Thompson; daughter Vicki and Steve Borders; son Kenny and Visa Thompson; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother Wayne Richards; sister-in-law Doris Richards; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville with Pastor Paul Carder officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Read More»

Youth recreation set to begin in Palmetto

Youth recreation in Palmetto has been a long-discussed need. But now, the non-profit Palmetto Youth League (PYL) is set to begin operations May 1 and will kick things off Apr. 17.

“A great effort has been undertaken to fulfill a need in the community,” said Mayor John Miller. “That need is now being addressed by a partnership with a non-profit that can supply recreational programming.”

PYL Director Bernard Knox said the organization is expecting to provide an array of both indoor and outdoor recreation activities for the city’s young people. Read More»

Motorcyle benefit raised money for injured officer

Members of the Blaze-N-Blood Riders and the Blue Knights sponsored a motorcycle benefit fundraiser March 27 for Palmetto Police Sgt. Lee Gragg who was severely injured in the line of duty last year.
