J. Barrett Owen accepts call to National Heights Baptist

The Rev. J. Barrett Owen

The Rev. J. Barrett Owen, a 2010 graduate of the McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University in Atlanta, has been called as pastor of National Heights Baptist Church, Fayetteville.

A resident of Atlanta, Owen has most recently served as pastor of Union Baptist Church, Pine Mountain. As a seminary and college student, he also served as youth minister, devotional writer and speaker, and camp and retreat pastor in a variety of national and international settings. Read More»

‘Love Feasts’ will be offered by Christ Our Shepherd Sat., Sun.

Christ Our Shepherd will offer Love Feasts in Moravian Tradition on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec.12, at 6 p.m. A tradition of the Moravian Church since 1727, Love Feasts include serving specially-baked buns and coffee or apple juice to all worshipers. Adults will be given a beeswax candle dressed in a red paper “ruff.” Children will receive a small flashlight instead of a candle.

The theme for this year’s Love Feasts is “Before the Marvel of This Night.” The services include traditional and Moravian carols sung by everyone. Read More»

Have spaghetti with Santa

The Youth of Fayette Presbyterian Church on Ga. Highway 92 North will host their annual Santa’s Spaghetti Supper on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the church.

A fundraiser for the group’s 2011 ski trip, the supper will be at 5:30 p.m.

Suggested donation is $5 per adult and $2 per child.

After dinner, Santa will stop by for pictures with the children.

Harvest offers Saturday services

Harvest Christian Community Center, a division of Eleventh Hour Call Church, has begun having Saturday worship services at 10:30 a.m. each Saturday at 383 N. Glynn St., (Ga. Highway 85), Fayetteville.

Guest pastors from local churches will be invited to preach.

She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hammonds of Luthersville, Mrs. Imogene Barker of Sharpsburg, and the late Arvell Stephens of Fayetteville. Lamar and Martha Carver

Lamar and Martha Carver will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at The Historic Fayetteville Train Depot, Saturday Dec.11, from 2 - 5 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend. Dress is casual attire.

The Carvers met on a blind date in 1958 while Lamar was a student at Georgia Tech. Lamar proposed on Valentine’s Day. They were married on Dec, 10, 1960 in Druid Hills Baptist Church Chapel. Read More»

‘The story is complete: I have my sister’

Peachtree City resident Devy Bruch (center), her daughter Robin Hunter Bunch (left) and Devy’s sister Pat Wilkins visit at Devy’s home in November. The two only learned of each other in 2009 and first met last December. Devy was one of the thousands of babies stolen by the infamous Georgia Tann during the 1920s through 1950.

“It’s still a bit unreal. I was the only one for so many years and now I have a family.”

Those were the animated words of Germantown, Tennessee resident Pat Wilks, who visited recently with her sister and Peachtree City resident Devy Bruch. The twowere first reunited last year after most of a lifetime of never knowing the other existed. The reason: Devy was one of the many babies stolen by the infamous Georgia Tann, who from the 1920s until 1950 ran the Tennessee Children’s Home Society and a home for unwed mothers. Read More»

FCHS’s holiday concert with the band benefits CARE

For the first time ever, the Fayette County High School Band holiday concert, scheduled for tomorrow night, will benefit high school students in need.
The band has partnered with the school system’s CARE (Children at Risk in Education) program to help fulfill requests from high school students on the program’s Angel Tree. School counselors recommend students for the Angel Tree if they and their families are in need of financial assistance. Georgia Singers will  present their fall concert  Friday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City. Admission is free, and the community is invited to attend and enjoy the wonderful sounds of this remarkable local choir.  Included in the musical selection is a wide variety of styles, both sacred and secular; classical to Broadway; followed by delightful music for the holiday season.
