FCHS’s holiday concert with the band benefits CARE

For the first time ever, the Fayette County High School Band holiday concert, scheduled for tomorrow night, will benefit high school students in need.
The band has partnered with the school system’s CARE (Children at Risk in Education) program to help fulfill requests from high school students on the program’s Angel Tree. School counselors recommend students for the Angel Tree if they and their families are in need of financial assistance. Georgia Singers in concert this Friday

Georgia Singers will present their fall concert Friday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City. Admission is free, and the community is invited to attend and enjoy the wonderful sounds of this remarkable local choir. Included in the musical selection is a wide variety of styles, both sacred and secular; classical to Broadway; followed by delightful music for the holiday season. Carla’s Dance Factory and Georgia Youth Ballet will begin a new exciting holiday tradition this year with the production of “A Nutcracker Christmas Spectacular.”

Oak Grove's top poetry reciters

Congratulations to the Oak Grove Grade-Level Poetry Recitation Winners. These students won at their respective grade levels by memorizing lengthy poems and reciting for the school. Local band gives world premiere

On Veterans Day, the Bennett’s Mill Symphonic Band gave the world premiere of a piece of music composed especially for them. “Mekong,” written by the well-known composer Robert W. Smith, is dedicated to all veterans of the Vietnam War. “Mekong” was commissioned in memory of TSGT (Retired) Tommy R. Williams, a victim of Agent Orange Cancer, through a grant from the Woodruff Salutes the Arts in Education that was awarded to band director Ricky D. Williams. Read More»

Christmas tea this Sunday

The Fayette County Historical Society will hold its annual Christmas tea on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 3 p.m.

There will be a slide show of their 2000 plus photographs now on file. It also has a number of Christmas gift items that might interest you.

It is located at the corner of Lee and Johnson streets in the Margaret Mitchell Research Center.

Fire stations helping Toys for Tots this Christmas

For the second year in a row, the Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services/EMA will partner with the City of Fayetteville Fire Department to support the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Drive.

Through Dec. 24, the stations will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for children under 9 years old and with a great demand for girl toys.
Firefighter/EMT Josh Sisk who organized the drive said, “Last year we were able to collect 380 toys through the drive and we hope that this year’s drive will top last year’s.” Read More»

Joan Neal, 82, of Fayetteville

Beloved Fayetteville resident Joan Neal died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010.

Millie Joan Burkes Land Neal was born on Feb. 27, 1928 in Phenix City, Ala., to George Ashby Burkes and Maybelle Ethel Barnes Burkes. She lived in Columbus, Rome, and Athens, Ga., where she went to Athens High and the University of Georgia. Read More»
