PTC mayor’s race now a party of 4; Bloom sets run for Post 4

If someone else enters the race for Peachtree City mayor, the new entrant might as well starting handing out racing silks, helmets and jockey’s whips, because it could turn out to be a horse race.

Tuesday night, Councilman George Dienhart announced his candidacy for the mayor’s post, joining fellow council member Vanessa Fleisch and sitting mayor Don Haddix. When you add already-announced businessman Ryan Jolly to the list, that puts the field at four, and there’s still time for another horse or two to make their entry in the crowded field before qualifying in August. Topic for this debate: District voting in Fayette

Both sides of the district voting debate aired their differences in a “debate” March 19 at the Harvest Community Christian Church.

Attorney Wayne Kendall told the crowd that district voting is necessary because history has shown that black candidates have been thwarted by their white counterparts in races for seats on the county commission and the county board of education. Read More»

Tyrone Elementary School was the setting March 23 for a legislative town hall meeting sponsored by Rep. Virgil Fludd (D-64) and freshman Rep. Ronnie Mabra (D-63). The general thrust of the town hall meeting was to provide an overview of some of the legislation under consideration before the session ends later this week. Fayette tells legislature to back off on T-SPLOST penalty

The regional 1-cent sales tax for transportation (TSPLOST) projects referendum was handily defeated last year by voters in the 10-county Atlanta Regional Commission area.

But because the vote failed, it triggered a penalty provision in the law that requires an increase in the local share for transportation projects that also receive state dollars.

The Fayette County Commission on March 15 voted unanimously to support having the penalty rescinded by the state legislature. Read More»

Mabra, Fludd hold legislative town hall meeting

State Representatives Virgil Fludd, D-Tyrone and Ronnie Mabra, D-Fayetteville, will host a town hall meeting at Tyrone Elementary School Saturday, March 23.

The two will present updates from the Georgia General Assembly, which is winding down rapidly to its final days of the 2013 session. One hot topic is expected to be ethics reform as the two halves of the legislature have to meet in the middle if they plan to pass any restrictions or an outright ban on most gifts, meals and tickets from lobbyists. Newcomers oust old guard remnants at Fayette GOP convention

When it comes to local politics, nothing in memory can compare to the action March 9 at the Fayette County Republican Party convention held at Peachtree Christian Church.

The convention produced a sea-change in leadership as the longtime local Republican establishment was replaced by the relative newcomers who began to take an active role in local politics in 2009 with the birth of the Tea Party movement. Read More»

Jolly wants to bring civility back to council meetings

Local businessman Ryan Jolly has announced he will seek the mayor’s office in Peachtree City this November.

At 34, Jolly is on the young side but he has seen enough council meetings first-hand to know what one of his top goals would be if elected: to bring credibility to council.

“My major goal is to bring respect back to the office of mayor,” Jolly said, noting that by definition the mayor’s major role is to lead city council meetings. “... The mayors, what they say and do is reflective on the whole city.” Read More»

Stover wins runoff election, takes vacant PTC/east Coweta House seat

The District 71 runoff election is over and David Stover will represent part of east Coweta County and portions of the west side of Peachtree City in the Ga. House of Representatives. The business owner defeated Sharpsburg general contractor Thomas Crymes in the March 5 election that saw Stover win 61 percent of the vote.

Both Republicans, Stover and Crymes were the top two vote-getters in the Feb. 5 special election that saw a field of six candidates facing off to fill the seat vacated by Robert Stokely. Read More»

D-71 House seat to be settled Tues.

It has been some time in the making, but the winner of the District 71 seat in the Ga. House of Representatives will finally be decided next week. Voters in the March 5 runoff will send either Thomas Crymes or David Stover to the Gold Dome to represent much of east Coweta County and portions of Peachtree City’s west side.
