Clayton State to offer minor in Film

Clayton State University is positioning itself to be a part of the rapidly growing film industry that is about to take shape in Fayette County. The university announced recently that a Film minor will be offered in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

“In response to the explosion of the film industry in the metro Atlanta area, Clayton State introduces the Department of Visual and Performing Arts’ new Film Minor,” said university relations director John Shiffert. New tests: Fayette schools among top 3 systems in metro area

The Ga. Dept. of Education (DOE) last week released its first Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) which measures Georgia public schools on a broad set of academic criteria. The new index methodology revealed that the average scores of Fayette’s elementary, middle and high schools were significantly higher than the state average and were in the top three school systems in metro Atlanta.

Hood Ave. school renamed in merger

The Fayette County Board of Education last month voted unanimously to rename Hood Avenue Primary School to reflect the school’s merger with Fayetteville Intermediate School (FIS) next school year.

The combined school will be known as Fayetteville Elementary School and will be housed in the building on the west side of the campus. The building closest to Tiger Trail will be closed.

Interim Superintendent Dan Colwell said the name Hood Avenue Primary is no longer appropriate since the school will function as a K-5 school beginning in August. Read More»

Newnan High School has received a silver medal national ranking in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best High Schools report, placing the school in the top 8 percent of the nation’s public, charter and magnet schools.

The magazine rated 21,035 high schools from across the nation. As a result of that ranking Newnan High placed at 1,680 nationally, in the top 8 percent of high schools in the nation. Newnan High also ranked 34th in the state of Georgia, putting the school in the top 8 percent of all Georgia high schools, including public, charter and magnet schools. Read More»

Music/business educator chosen as Coweta County's teacher of the year

Central Education Center music and music business teacher Dr. Lyn Schenbeck has been named Coweta County’s 2013 Teacher of the Year.

Schenbeck was chosen for the honor from among Coweta’s 31 teachers of the year and from among three finalists, including Thomas Crossroads Elementary School special education teacher Donna Hightower and East Coweta High School 11th grade AP American literature teacher Randy Robbins, said school system spokesman Dean Jackson. “I stand here in complete and utter shock. I am so excited. I just can’t believe this,” said Chasity Manning as she took the podium to accept the award as Fayette County’s 2013 Teacher of the Year.
