Senoia school gets charter extension

It was an announcement that parents of school children at the Coweta Charter Academy (CCA) at Senoia have been waiting for. The school last week received a five-year renewal of its charter and is expected to soon begin construction work that will expand the school on Ga. Highway 16 on Senoia’s west side.

Ga. Charter Educational Foundation (GCEF) board member Lyn Michaels-Carden said the CCA received a five-year charter renewal last week from the Ga. State Board of Education. The renewal is effective beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, Michaels-Carden said. Read More»

Changes made to current emergency response plans; exercises scheduled

Principals and administrators from across the Fayette County School System were joined by law enforcement and emergency management officials from around Fayette County on Jan. 11 to discuss the school system’s emergency crisis plan with representatives from the Ga. Schools trim costs but still need millions more

Cost-saving efforts since July by the Fayette County School System have trimmed $2.5 million in expenses during the first half of the school year and are projected to result in a June 30 fund balance of $5.8 million.

While significant, that total will still require many millions more to be cut to ensure a balanced budget for the 2013-2014 school year.

Interim Superintendent Dan Colwell on Monday said the recommendations on those cuts will come in the next couple of months. Read More»

Students at Robert J. Burch Elementary School in Tyrone participated in a coin drive to help show their Burch value of kindness. Burch students and teachers set a goal of raising $500 to help impoverished families in third-world countries through World Vision. Fourth grade teacher Cori Davis brought the idea to Burch and students embraced the philosophy of “Burch Bears Care” raising $675 for the World Vision fundraiser. With the funds raised in Burch’s “Spirit of Christmas” coin drive, they will help nine families by providing six goats and 18 chickens to families in need. Read More»

Coweta schools issue update on emergency preparedness

The Coweta County Board of Education’s safety committee was given an update last week from Superintendent Steve Barker concerning school safety and security measures. Coweta schools in January will see an increase in patrols and a decrease in points of entry at schools countywide.

Barker told committee members that all schools and the school system as a whole have extensive safety procedures and emergency response plans in place, and that personnel are trained regularly on the procedures and on a wide variety of emergency response plans. Read More»

Coweta County schools raise over 180,000 food items

The spirit of giving could be seen throughout Coweta County schools as the holidays approached. Students raised more than 180,000 food items or cash equivalents for this year’s Coweta County Can-A-Thon sponsored by the Newnan Junior Service League.
