Coweta above state/national on SAT scores

The 2009-2010 school year has come to a close. SAT Reasoning Test scores for the school year are being tabulated across Georgia and the United States and those figures will be released around Labor Day. But how did Coweta County schools fare recently compared to the state and national averages?

Formerly known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, SAT tests historically included Math and Verbal components, each with a maximum score of 800. A Writing component was added in 2006 that also carried a maximum score of 800. Today’s new SAT has a combined maximum score of 2,400. Read More»

Students from seven Fayette County schools attended the second annual Athena Music and Leadership Camp, sponsored by Music Essentials, June 8-12 on the campus of the University of West Georgia. State money for schools outpaces Fayette pupil growth for decade

Those who keep up with the Fayette County Board of Education are well aware of the tens of millions of dollars in austerity cuts by the Georgia Department of Education in recent years.

But what about the state dollars — called QBE (Quality Basic Education) dollars — that help fund the local school system?

Over the past decade those dollars increased by 23.5 percent, while the overall General Fund budget increased by 46.7 percent. At the same time, student enrollment increased by 9.4 percent. Read More»

The award recognizes two seniors for their qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service. Knowing how to sew might come in handy some day, but using newly acquired sewing skills to help the community is what students are doing now.

Students in Laurel Hinze’s Family and Consumer Science classes at Whitewater Middle have been busy this year learning how to quilt and sew. While students often make items to take home, those in Hinze’s classes have generously donated their creations to help various charitable organizations on a local, state and national level.
