Nearly 1,000 schooled out of attendance area

It has been reported recently that Fayette County schools have more than 330 students attending from out of county, who accompany a parent that is an employee of the school system and have permission to attend a school here. Enrollment still down at county schools

Now into the third month of the 2012-2013 school year, Fayette County schools are reporting enrollment of 20,463 students and have lost only 213 students compared to the same time last year.

Not clowning around about safety

Students at Burch Elementary in Tyrone got a “crash” course in seat belt use, fire safety and a host of other safety tips Nov. 1 thanks to these fire safety clowns from the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. In this skit, students learned about the necessity to buckle up and they also covered techniques including the creation of a fire evacuation plan at their own home along with the need to change batteries in smoke detectors every six months. Coweta BoE wants input on school calendar

The Coweta County Board of Education is looking for input from parents on which of two proposed school calendars should be adopted for the next two school years. Public comment can be made online on the school system’s website.

School system spokesman Dean Jackson said the school board anticipates adopting calendars for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years at its Dec. 11 meeting.

Jackson said the school board reviewed two versions of those calendars at the November board meeting and has requested public comment on those calendars as it prepares to make a final decision next month. Read More»

Peeples hosts veterans

Peeples Elementary School recently hosted over 70 veterans for their annual Veterans Day Walk. Each veteran was escorted by a student host around the school hallways. Students lined the hallways and waved flags while singing patriotic songs they had learned in music class. Blowout victories for Whitewater and Sandy Creek in first round

Advancing to the next round is the most important thing in the state football playoffs. Style points aren't all bad though either. Both Whitewater and Sandy Creek advanced in convincing fashion and are now in their respective classifications' sweet sixteen.

Streaking incident brings disciplinary, legal action

Streaking across the football field in his boxer shorts at East Coweta High School during halftime at the Newnan High School game last week left 16-year-old junior Gunner Cook facing obstruction charges from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. A video taken of Gunner’s run where he was tased by a deputy has Maj. James Yarbrough saying the deputy followed policy. Yet another video of a deputy cursing at students and pushing one of them a short time later at the concession stand has resulted in an internal investigation of the incident. Read More»
