Warm memories of time spent at Melear's

My first glass of that famous Melear’s iced tea was 44 years ago, when I moved to Fayetteville. I have lost count on how many I’ve had since then.

The number of meals I’ve enjoyed in the adjoining meeting room also number in the hundreds. I have listened to famous people speak in that room, and I’ve had the honor of speaking to quite a few myself there.

The Fayette County Kiwanis is nearly 60 years old and most of their meetings were held on that very site. Read More»

That’s a Guided by Voices song. I saw them at The Cotton Club (remember that place?) in Atlanta a long time ago with my friends John Thompson and Lindsay Bianchi. Lindsay was an editor for this section more than a few years back. He passed away the other day and he will be missed.

In the scope of things, I did not know Lindsay for a very long time. I met him through John and we discovered that we shared a number of common interests: indie rock, cult movies, Pee Wee Herman.

One year ago, 200,000 people were killed and 1.5 million remain homeless as a result of a devastating earthquake in the nation of Haiti.

If only this were a funny story, it wouldn’t be so sad. If only it weren’t so sad, maybe it wouldn’t be so true to so many. Funny will return next week.

If only I were rich, I’d not have a care in the world. I could buy anything, go anywhere, and afford the most expensive things. Health issues wouldn’t be a problem because I would have the most expensive doctors always on call. Traveling the world in my private jet would be a never-ending trip — never-ending seeing so many who still have so little, some without even clean water. Read More»

Some said the Congressional fight in the U.S. House to repeal Obamacare would have been unseemly last week as legislators tried to absorb the attempted murder of one of their fellow members, Gabrielle Giffords, a crime in Tucson leaving six dead and 14 wounded. Here we go again, as reported in The Citizen, Georgia House Speaker Ralston has intervened into the operation of the Transportation Roundtable because he had concerns over getting the tax passed. It resulted in Mayor Reed, of Atlanta, being put on the Executive Committee. So much for the legislature not getting involved in the process after passage of the bill. Read More»

The Left apparently has taken to heart the admonition of former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to “never let a serious crisis go to waste.”

In the aftermath of the Tucson tragedy that killed six and wounded 14 others, the Left has attacked talk radio, Fox News, Sarah Palin and anyone else it can smear. Never mind there is not a shred of evidence that the accused gunman, the mentally disturbed Jared Lee Loughner, ever watched Glenn Beck or listened to Rush Limbaugh (Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, a Democrat, irresponsibly suggested Limbaugh incited Loughner). The other day I ran into General Robert E. Lee, along with his wife, and his arch nemesis, General Ulysses S. Grant.

I had just finished a speaking engagement at the TRR Cobb House in Athens, Ga. (Mr. Cobb, among many accomplishments, co-founded the University of Georgia Law School. He died at Fredericksburg defending the Confederate Constitution which he had authored). Read More»
