Tina Fey and Amy Poehler team up again for this comedy about modern day baby-making. In a time when an increasing number of women are opting to pursue alternate methods to enter the world of parenting, i.e. in vitro fertilization, adoption and even surrogates, it’s only fitting that Hollywood would eventually broach the topic. What better way is there, then, than a comedy starring two of the funniest women on TV. ‘Forbidden Kingdom’: Action/comedy extravaganza!Jason (Michal Angarano) is a South Boston teen who loves kung-fu films. He can always get them at the video store run by old Hop (Kung-fu action star Jackie Chan) and the two are friends. One day when he is at the shop, Jason notices an old bo staff, which Hop says was supposed to be picked up by a man who never showed up. Mike’s summer movie previewI’m sorry, dear readers, but I did not make it to “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” this weekend. I wanted to. I liked the first movie and thought this one had some promise, but, the timing didn’t work out. I’ll wager a guess that unless you saw the first film, there is no way in Hades you are seeing this one. Pay ‘Rent’ a visit before it closesThe Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical “Rent,” written by Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif, is coming to The Fox Theatre in Atlanta for five performances from April 25-27. ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’: So very likableYes, this film comes from the guys behind “Knocked Up” and “Superbad,” and yes, the humor tends to be on the more suggestive side, but if “Knocked Up” and “Superbad” are like swarthy, foul-mouthed lotharios at a singles bar, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” wants to take its time and get to know you better and it’s O.K. if you just want to be friends. That amiable and genial attitude puts a smile on your face early on, keeps you laughing and chuckling throughout and will have you remembering it fondly for days afterward. “Knocked Up” and “Superbad,” two films I loved by the way, are great for the occasional one night stand a few times a year, but “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” just might be marriage material. ‘Smart People’: A good first effortWith a solid cast and an interesting premise, commercial director Noam Murro makes the transition to feature films with the new indie flick “Smart People.” Lunch and Listen on the Courthouse lawnFayetteville Main Street and Lane Brown Properties presents Lunch on the Lawn on Friday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Fayetteville Courthouse. Modesty is all the rage at the 2008 Pure Fashion ShowTeen models hit runway to change fashion culture one outfit at a time On Sunday, April 20, the Pure Fashion Show, an annual faith-based event, will hit the runways again in style, as it has in Atlanta for the past nine years. This year’s event will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center. With an emphasis on modesty – mirroring the ‘Modesty Movement’ that says girls can wear cute clothes and still maintain their dignity – Pure Fashion includes more than 60 teen models and stresses that real models are role models who know who they are and know that they can ‘change the culture one outfit at a time!’ ‘Lion King’: Music and special effects galore! You know the story – Simba is a young lion cub who was just born to the joy of his parents, Mufasa and Sarabi. He is very energized, and he has his lioness friend, Nala, to tag along for the ride. ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’McIntosh High School’s drama and music students will bring the Peanuts gang to life in their production of the musical “You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The play will be staged at 7:30 p.m. on April 17, 18 and 19 at the school’s auditorium, 201 Walt Banks Road, Peachtree City. ‘Street Kings’: To live and die in Hell-AJames Ellroy has penned some great works about cops, crime and corruption in Los Angeles. “L.A. Confidential” was an Oscar contender and “The Black Dahlia” desperately wanted to be. The latest film with his name on it, “Street Kings,” ditches the 1950s and moves the story to modern Los Angeles where things are a whole lot grittier and way more dangerous. Doggie Dash 2008In 1996 a group of individuals formed Georgia Heartland Humane Society (GHHS) to address the abuse and abandonment of companion animals in Coweta and Fayette counties. Sail Away From Nim’s Island**1/2 Nim (Abigail Breslin from “Little Miss Sunshine” which I have never seen) is a girl who lives on an uncharted island with her dad, a marine biologist named Jack (Gerald Butler). Nim thinks she is living the perfect life. She has animal friends, a dad who loves her, and the Alex Rover book series. She loves the Alex Rover stories because of his taste for action and adventure. Mary Poppins auditionsThe highly successful and award-winning Broadway and upcoming touring productions of “Mary Poppins” will be holding open casting calls in Atlanta for children who can sing, dance, and act on Sunday, Apr. 13. “The Ruins” - Horror tale grows on you***1/2 Scott Smith’s horror novel “The Ruins” was praised by Stephen King as the “best horror novel of the new century.” As a huge fan of King’s let me tell you that is not hyperbole. I read “The Ruins” shortly after it was released while on vacation (thankfully not in Mexico) and finished it early one morning in the kitchen while everyone else was still asleep. The book gnawed at me. It was disturbing and bleak, as well as terrifying and unsettling. “The Ruins” is one of the best horror novels I have ever read.
