The Flat Rock Lady Eagles won the Fayette County Middle School Volleyball Championship for the second year in a row last week in front of a capacity crowd at Whitewater High School. Fans, including the FRMS "Bleacher Creatures," cheered as the Eagles bumped, set and spiked their way to victory.

Whitewater soccer player Kyle Adams will be recognized as Student-Athlete of the Year for Class AAAA at The Georgia Soccer Coaches Association banquet next week. He will be joined by Coach Shane Pulliam, who will be named Coach of the Year in Class AAAA. Starr’s Mill coach Mike Hanie will be named Class AAAA Coach of the Month.

Prior to the start of McIntosh’s state semi-final lacrosse game against the defending state champion Westminster Wildcats, head coach Mike Meutzel reminded his team that they were one step away from the state championship game.

Starr’s Mill Panthers (17-9) vs. Northside, Warner Robins Eagles (19-5), 4:30 /7:30 p.m.

The Panthers have won four of their last five games, scoring 53 runs and allowing 21 in that span. Starr’s Mill scored in the double digits in 12 of their 17 wins this season and were only shutout twice. Overall, Starr’s Mill has outscored its opponents 230-122. The Panthers’ longest winning streak this season is five games.

The Whitewater Wildcats got off to a rough start this season, losing six of their first 11 games, including five to state-ranked opponents.

Landmark Christian’s girls won their seventh state title over the weekend, winning the Class A meet with 82 points.

Starr’s Mill’s boys tennis team got past McIntosh last week 3-2 to place themselves in the AAAA semi-finals. Ignacio Donnet and Alex Ford were singles winners for the Panthers, as was the doubles team of Alex Seath and John Flowers.

It’s official - no Fayette County girls team will win a state soccer title this year.

In addition to McIntosh being knocked out by Marist at home on Saturday, the Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers fell to Salem 5-2 and St. Pius defeated Whitewater 1-0.

There is an old adage that football is a game of inches.

The same could be said for soccer, to which the third-ranked McIntosh Lady Chiefs could attest after losing to top-ranked Marist in the quarterfinals of the Class AAAA state playoffs Saturday in Peachtree City.

The eighth-ranked Chiefs withstood a furious comeback by the sixth-ranked St. Pius Golden Lions to hold on for a 5-4 victory and advance to the semifinals of the state playoffs for the first time in the school’s four-year history of playing lacrosse Saturday afternoon in Peachtree City.

The Whitewater boys defeated Dalton 2-1 and will now play in the AAAA final four.

Dalton took an early lead on the Wildcats, but Robbie Zeider scored the tying goal off of a deflection from a Ryan Pugh shot. Zeider scored the go ahead goal off an assist from Andy DeBusk.

When the top two teams in the classification meet, it makes sense that it takes over 90 minutes to determine a winner. It doesn't make the game any less intense though for players or fans.
