What “local web”? you savvy local business owners and managers may ask.
I’m talking about the WorldWide Web (the ubiquitous “www” in Internet addresses), but turned to the advantage of us local business operators.

In today’s Internet-connected world, an organization’s online presence is in many ways even more important than their physical presence. There’s no denying the importance of a physical office to an organization in providing a place to meet, conduct business, and conveying an image. The scope of the physical office is, obviously, limited to those who drive by or enter the premises.

The most often heard complaint about Twitter, a “real time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices”, is that there is no reason that people should care about the minutiae of other people’s lives. In talking with people about the web site/service, some of the things this reporter has heard range from “Why do I care what you had for breakfast?” to “Nobody’s life is all that interesting anyway?” I agree, but Twitter has a purpose and, if used properly, can provide some good information in the most timely fashion possible.

Having a useful, informative online presence is virtually required for local governments in today’s technically savvy society, no matter how many citizens they serve, and the Town of Tyrone recognizes that. The Town’s website (www.tyrone.org), which began as a humble one page site with a few lines of text and two photos in 1998, now contains over 80 pages of information and takes up over 5 gigabytes of space on its web server. Not bad for a Town of only 7,000 residents.
