Jazz on the menu at Spivey Hall
By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
Calling all jazz afficionados! Spivey Hall, on the campus of Clayton College and State University, will be the setting for the Atlanta Jazz Showcase, Sunday, July 29 at 5 p.m. The emcees of the event are WABE's H. Johnson, who has been hosting the show "Jazz Classics" for over 20 years, and WCLK's Carl Anthony. Both men are among the most popular jazz personalities in the area. The show will feature pianists Gary Motley and Bill Anschell, vocalist Audrey Shakir, tenor saxophonists Kebbi Wiliams and Rick Bell, alto saxophonist Joe Jennings, guitarist Mike Kelly, trumpeter Lester Walker, bassists Rodney Jordan and Sonny Harris and drummers Keith Runfola and Tommy Cecil. There will be two halves to the show. Each half will be hosted by a piano trio, first Anschell's, then Motley's, which will play a tune and then serve as the backing group for each of the soloists, who will perform two songs apiece. This is not a jam session, but a rehearsed concert. The music is straight ahead jazz, not jazz flavors, and offers a look at the strength and diversity of the Atlanta jazz scene. Tickets are $15. Phone 770-961-3683.
