A special job fair for employees of an industry that will soon shut down was among items discussed by an industries council of the Fayette County Development Authority last week.

Authority President and CEO Chris Clark led the 20 industry representatives present in planning monthly programs for 2002 that would be of interest to them.

Sealed Air, a corporation in Peachtree City, will be closing in the next few months. A job fair will be conducted at its plant by various industries in the county to help displaced employees find a way to keep employment within the county.

Among other items discussed was a seminar on taxes in February. Topics suggested by those present included sales tax, property tax and tax credits, with other subjects on transportation problems, school apprenticeship programs, human resource needs, possible pooling of purchases, a Web site for existing industries and needs in finance, banking and economic development.

Council member Pat Sennett, youth apprenticeship coordinator for the Fayette County School System, spoke on the need for a university center in the county. Pathway Communities has offered land for the project and it is anticipated that a building would be built and then leased out to institutions such as Gordon College, Griffin Technical College and Clayton College & State University.

The Development Authority meets each first Thursday, generally at the Peachtree City Library meeting room. It can be reached at 770-461-5253.
