Fayette math teams bring home awards Some of Georgia's best mathematicians can be found in Fayette. Recently, high school math teams across the state competed in the Berry College Math Tournament. Starr's Mill and Sandy Creek High School math teams nearly swept the competition, bringing home the first and second place trophies, respectively. "We and Sandy Creek cleaned up at Berry College," said Annette Kersey, math teacher at Starr's Mill High. "There was only one award that didn't come back to Fayette County." The competition consisted of a 20-problem written exam followed by 10 ciphering questions and a team power question. In the ciphering competition, four team members participated individually. Students had only two minutes to solve each problem without the use of a calculator. If the correct answer was calculated in the first minute, the competitor received the full 10 points. However, a correct answer rendered in the second minute earned only five points. In the power problem, students were allowed to use their calculators and work as a team to reach a solution. Overall, Starr's Mill scored 485 to take first place an 80-point lead over the team that placed second. Sandy Creek walked away with a score of 390 just 15 points shy of the second place scoring team. In the individual competition, Jon Straub of Starr's Mill placed first with 150 points, scoring perfect on the written competition. Bob Martin, also of Starr's Mill, placed second with 135 points and Camille Smith of Sandy Creek came in third with 115 points. Additionally, Chris Wells of Sandy Creek placed sixth and Missy Durham of Starr's Mill tied for seventh place in the individual competition.
