Mentors needed for Fayette students If Fayette residents are looking for a meaningful way to volunteer their time while working with children in the community, the Fayette County Friends Mentoring program has a solution. The Friends program is in need of adults that are interested in establishing one-on-one relationships with children. Established in 1993 and loosely modeled after Big Brothers of America, the program has provided mentors for hundreds of school children over the years. Mentor volunteers provide support and guidance to help school-aged youths achieve academic and personal success. Mentors meet weekly with their students in school at scheduled times during the school day for approximately one-hour. While together, the two may read, talk, study or just spend quality time with each other. The mentor may also help the student with class assignments or personal goals or help him or her develop new interests and hobbies. "Other than rearing my own children, mentoring has been one of the most worthwhile things that I've ever done," said Varner Holmes, owner of Gold's Gym and a mentor. "It's rewarding, and at the same time very humbling, to have an impact on someone else's life." The program currently has a waiting list of students who would benefit from the friendship of a caring adult. A training class for new mentors will be Tuesday, Jan. 8, at McIntosh High School from 7-9 p.m. For details phone Donna Worcester at 770-460-3535, ext. 173, or e-mail worcester.donna@fcboe.org.
