Kedron sock hop benefits FDNY Students involved in the after-school program at Kedron Elementary School recently enjoyed a sock hop, which included a sock drive for firefighters in New York City. During a regular day in the ASP, students are offered a variety of activities including computer lab, arts and crafts, creative play, study hall and playground time. This special event gave the children an opportunity to change their routine and have fun for a cause. As a reward for their donations, each child had his or her name put in a bucket for every pair of socks that he or she brought to the event. A winner was drawn from each grade level and the winners got to meet the ASP staff for dinner at Cici's Pizza. "It's important for the children to learn how to give to those in need while they are still young," said Lois Woodward, ASP site coordinator at Kedron. Additionally, winners were selected in the categories of student wearing the most colorful socks, the best homemade socks and the most unique socks. These three category winners also joined the winners of the drawings for dinner at Cici's. Throughout the afternoon, students participated in other events such as hula-hoop and limbo contests as well as having their pictures taken on a Harley Davidson motorcycle and in a red, 1966 Mustang convertible. "I was very pleased with the enthusiasm of the children and their parents," Woodward said. "Their generosity was overwhelming and it was obvious that everyone had fun in the process."
