What to do about these unwanted papers in yard? I moved to Peachtree City from Atlanta six years ago. In Atlanta, when you go out of town, if you stop your newspaper, have the post office hold your mail, and maybe put a timer on your house lights, you can relax in the knowledge that you've done everything you can to make your home appear normal so that it won't be a target for criminals. However, here in Fayette County, those measures aren't enough. You also have to ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the half dozen or so anemic, un-proofread little "newspapers" thrown there by a bunch of half-crazed Mario Andretti wannabes who hurtle through your neighborhood every week. With the exception possibly of The Citizen, which has a professional appearance, contains worthwhile local news, and a touch of humor courtesy of Billy Murphy, the others are nothing but repetitious drivel with some paranoid rantings thrown in for good measure. I realize many people won't share my opinion about the newspapers I'm referring to, but am I the only person in the county who's annoyed that I get papers I haven't subscribed to and don't want? Doesn't it bother anyone else that we don't have a choice in the matter? Mrs. Dana Cox Peachtree City [The publisher replies: We are sorry Mrs. Cox feels that way about local newspapers. Here at The Citizen we maintain a computerized list of people and addresses that don't want our papers thrown. We also maintain a "temporary stop" list for those who want the paper but leave home on vacation or for extended periods of time. We invite those interested in this to call us at 770-719-1880 during normal business hours weekdays. Our "stop" system depends on independent contractor carriers and is not perfect. We occasionally make mistakes. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We do try not to wear out our welcome. Cal Beverly.]
