PTC Rotary marks 35 years

The Rotary Club of Peachtree City celebrated its 35th anniversary during a recent luncheon meeting at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center, enjoying cake and champagne while reminiscing about the club's earlier years.

Officially chartered Nov. 13, 1967, it was the first civic club established in Peachtree City. It was initially sponsored by the Newnan Rotary Club, and in turn sponsored the formation of the Fayetteville Rotary Club and the Fayette Daybreak Club (formerly the Rotary Club of Tyrone).

Among the many projects of the Peachtree City club, probably the most well-known is the Rotary Phone Book, which now serves all of Fayette County. The proceeds from the sale of advertising in the phone book support the many endeavors, both local and worldwide, in which Peachtree City Rotary is involved.

This club is responsible for several familiar Peachtree City landmarks. The "Welcome to Peachtree City" sign at the intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 74, which denotes the area civic organizations, was a Rotary project several years ago. The club has also built the Arnold Cheek Fishing Dock at the Line Creek Nature Center and the Luther Glass Memorial Gazebo at Three Ponds on Peachtree Parkway South.

Sponsorship of the "Get Out The Vote" political forum, which introduces local political candidates and their views to the voters, has been a valuable service Peachtree City Rotary has performed for many years. Additionally, the club supports the Friends Mentoring Program of the Fayette County School System, the Southern Crescent Memory Walk for Alzheimer's, the All Children's Playground, the YMCA, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, the Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital, and AIDS awareness assemblies in local high schools.

The club also sponsors Interact Clubs at McIntosh and Starr's Mill high schools. Interact is the high school arm of Rotary.

The year the Rotary Club of Peachtree City donated signs on the cart path which give directions to bike riders, runners, walkers and golf cart drivers on the city's path system. The club has also "adopted" Picnic Park to help the city maintain this popular facility.

As a supporter of local fire and police departments, the club sponsors the annual Peachtree City Police Banquet and the annual Firefighters Award Banquet, and each week has a different member of the police force as a guest at its regular meeting.

Peachtree City Rotary is also active internationally. A current major international project is Polio-Plus, the aim of which is to eradicate polio worldwide by 2005. Only a few pockets remain where polio is rampant, and to help complete the eradication, Rotarians have left Polio-Plus containers in local businesses. Residents are asked to drop loose change into these to help accomplish this tremendous health goal.
